Through a combination of X-ray scattering and energy-filtered electron microscopy, we have quantitatively examined the relationship between the mesostructure of the photoactive layer and device performance in PBTTT/PC(71)BM solar cells. We can predict device performance from X-ray structural data through a simple morphological model which includes the exciton diffusion length.

{[Ru(CH3CN)3]2(tppz)}(4+) (tppz = tetra-2-pyridylpyrazine) undergoes photoinduced CH3CN exchange with λirr ≥ 610 nm in H2O. In contrast, cis-{[Ru(tpy)(L)]2(bpm)}(4+) (tpy = 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine, bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine, L = CH3CN) is not reactive, but the complex with L = DMSO is photoactive. These complexes are potentially useful for the release of multiply caged drugs.

An L- or D-glutamic acid based bolaamphiphile was found to form uniform helical nanotubes in water, which were used as the template to generate silica nanotubes. The formed silica nanotubes have supramolecular chirality in the inner walls, and were further used to load photoactive azobenzene moieties to realize a chiroptical switch.

In situ one-pot rapid layer-by-layer assembly of polymeric films as an active layer of a photoactive device via alternation of reductive and oxidative electropolymerization has been demonstrated. This novel fabrication without moving or changing experimental gears would be a powerful strategy to develop automated layer-by-layer machines.
