Verruconis gallopava is an uncommon cause of phaeohyphomycosis. We describe an unusual case of disseminated V. gallopava infection in a renal transplant recipient involving the endocardium but without endocarditis, associated with fungaemia and infection in the skin, oral cavity, brain and lung. The isolate was first detected from blood cultures which is rare. Surgical resection of cardiac fung...
Phaeohyphomycosis is a term used to describe infections caused by dematiaceous fungi, i.e. fungi which contain melanin in their cell wall. Cladophialophora bantiana has been implicated to cause brain abscess in immunocompromised patients. Infection caused by Cladophialophora bantiana in an immunocompetent host is relatively rare. Surgical site infection at abdominal subcutaneous tissue caused b...
We present an unusual equine endometritis case associated with Cladophialophora bantiana in a 15-year-old mare. The mare displayed infertility and uterine fluid accumulation with numerous black, hairy granules. Microscopically, the fluid revealed numerous septate, dark fungal hyphae and conidia in chains. Culture yielded C. bantiana (CBS 138271); the species was confirmed by internal transcribe...
We report here a clinical case of phaeohyphomycosis in an 18-year-old male giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca). Skin lesions on the giant panda disappeared following 2 months of treatment with ketoconazole. Three months after discontinuing the treatment, there was a clinical and mycological relapse. The disease progression was no longer responsive to ketoconazole. Microscopy and polymerase cha...
