Five cases of primary peritonitis are presented, with a sixth related case of pneumococcal peritonitis secondary to a ruptured ovarian cyst. The patients comprised 4 young girls who recovered, and 2 elderly females who died. Pneumococci were isolated in 3 patients; no organism was found in the other 3. One case of primary measles peritonitis has no apparent precedent.

Background: Peritonitis is the main cause of withdrawal from peritoneal dialysis (PD) therapy in Japan. The precise extent of PD-associated peritonitis in Japan has not been investigated since 2005; we aimed to clarify the recent incidence and prognosis of PD peritonitis. Methods: The 248 institutional members of the Japanese Society for Peritoneal Dialysis were surveyed by questionnaire regard...

Peritonitis remains a leading complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). About 18% of the infection-related mortality in PD patients is a result of peritonitis. We present a case of peritonitis in a patient on automated PD in whom the infection was not related to a break in PD technique, but to an unusual cause: retrograde transmission of a gonococcal organism.

Fungal peritonitis due to Curvularia species in patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis is a very rare problem. We report a case of peritonitis caused by Curvularia inaequalis. This is the first report in the English literature of this species causing human infection. We also review the six previously reported cases of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis peritonitis caused by other Curvul...

It is not known whether atypical Mycobacterium (AM) causes peritonitis in humans. We described a case of tuberculosis-like peritonitis caused by an AM. Genetic analysis of the biopsy specimens suggested an AM infection. Thus, we concluded that peritonitis in humans can be caused by some AM species as well as by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex.

BACKGROUND There has not been a comprehensive examination to date of peritoneal dialysis (PD) outcomes after temporary haemodialysis (HD) transfer for peritonitis. METHODS The study included all incident Australian patients who experienced peritonitis between 1 October 2003, and 31 December 2011, using Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant Registry data. Patients were grouped into...

BACKGROUND Peritonitis and exit-site infections (ESI) are major causes of morbidity in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The application of topical mupirocin to exit sites reduces such complications, and prolongs life in PD. Since the year 2000, this topical treatment has been used in our hospital on new PD patients. We analysed the results of this protocol, and studied the effects of comorbid...

BACKGROUND Peritonitis and exit-site infections (ESI) are major causes of technique failure and morbidity in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. Topical mupirocin on the exit-site has been shown to reduce such complications and prolong life in PD. Since the year 2000, such an approach has been adopted for our new incident PD population. We now report the results of this new protocol. We also stu...

UNLABELLED Peritonitis has been the most common complication of continues ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) since it was first implemented, and it remains the leading cause of treatment failure and transfer to other renal replacement therapies. This study presents a Colombian series with a total of 2,469 episodes of peritonitis in 914 patients from a cohort of 1,497 patients on PD, who were...
