BACKGROUND Loosening of screws is a common problem in orthopedic and maxillofacial surgery. Modifying the implant surface to improve the mechanical strength of screws has been tried and reported. We developed screws coated with fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2)-apatite composite layers. We then showed, in a percutaneous external fixation model, that this composite layer had the ability to hold...

The long-term results of the key grip procedure (tenodesis of the flexor pollicis longus tendon to the radius, release of the A1 pulley, and percutaneous pin fixation of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb) were evaluated in 10 tetraplegic patients. Seven patients also had tenodesis of the extensor pollicis longus and brevis tendons to prevent flexion at the metacarpophalangeal (MP) joint. P...

Supracondylar fracture is one of the most common elbow injuries in children (1). Currently, closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of Gartland's types II and III supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children have become the standard method of treatment (2,3). However, controversy exists about the optimal K-wires configuration required to provide adequate fracture stability to maintain r...

Radio-carpal joint dislocation, with or without fracture of the radius, is an uncommon injury; only 21 cases have previously been reported. Successful treatments of closed reduction and surgery have also been reported. A 35-year-old right-handed man was injured in a traffic accident and taken to an emergency room of a hospital, where radiographic examination showed a right palmar radio-carpal j...

Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are a common pediatric elbow injury that are historically associated with morbidity due to malunion, neurovascular complications, and compartment syndrome. True anteroposterior and lateral radiographs are essential not only for an accurate diagnosis, but also for creating a treatment plan for these injuries. A staging system (based on the lateral radiograp...

Background: Scaphoid fracture, as the most common fracture of the wrist, is complicated sometimes by non-:::union:::. The purpose of this study is  to compare radiologic and functional outcomes in patients with scaphoid non-:::union::: who were treated by bone graft with fixation (pin or screw) or without fixation. Methods: In this cohort retrospective study, all patients with scaphoid non-:...

We report a case of migration of a Steinman pin to the innominate vein. A pin was used to fix a shoulder separation but a broken piece was left unattended at the time of removal of the pin. How this piece made its way in to innominate vein is puzzling. To our knowledge migration of fixation wires to the innominate vein has not been reported previously.

Brachymetacarpia is a condition manifesting a shortened metacarpal that is caused by early closure of the epiphyseal plate and believed to arise idiopathically. The correction for brachymetacarpia is usually for cosmetic reasons as brachymetacarpia does not impair function. The literature indicates several different approaches to lengthening digits, including single-stage lengthening and rapid ...

This study was designed to evaluate treatment patterns in open treatment and percutaneous fixation of distal radius fractures, compare morbidity rates for the 2 types of treatment, and compare costs associated with the procedure and treatment of complications up to 1 year after surgery. From a 5% sample of nationwide Medicare claims records (1997-2009), patients with distal radius fractures wer...

The hybrid fixators, or the fixators that use the thin wire fixation in the periarticular fragment combined with the half-pin fixation in the diaphysis, have made the multiplanar external fixation easier to use and thus growing in popularity. However, the configuration of the ideal hybrid has not been elucidated yet. The purpose of this study was to determine the stiffness characteristics affec...
