A mild and efficient synthesis of pyrazolo[3,4-b]pyridine-6(7H)-one derivatives via a three-component reaction of an aldehyde, Meldrum's acid and 3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-amine using recyclable polyethylene glycol (PEG)-400 as a reaction medium is described. Novel stable tellurium-containing carbohydrate derivatives are prepared from hexitols and pentitols through a double nucleophilic substitution with NaHTe in PEG-400. These tellurosugars react at very high rates with two-electron oxidants, including hypochlorous and peroxynitrous acid, formed at sites of inflammation, and show considerable promise as protective agents against oxidative damage.

A novel method for the synthesis of 2,6-dihydroxy substituted chalcones via Claisen-Schmidt is introduced using recyclable PEG-400 as an alternative reaction solvent. The reaction is clean with excellent yield, shorter reaction time and reduces the use of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by IR, mass spectroscopy and elemental analysis.

In the present study, the oxidation of 3-(4-chloro-1H-imidazol-5-yl)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1ones with mercuric(II) acetate in in polyethylene glycol (PEG-400) gave the corresponding 2-((4-chloro-1Himidazol-5-yl)methylene)benzofuran-3(2H)-ones.
