A parathyroid lipoadenoma is a very rare cause of mediastinal mass. The clinical features of this pathologic entity is similar to those of the more common pathologic variants of parathyroid disease associated with primary hyperparathyroidism. A 58-year-old woman presented with huge multinodular goiter. Her thoracic CT scan was done before surgery, showed a posterior mediastinal mass. On microsc...
OBJECTIVES Parathyroid carcinoma (PC) is a rare parathyroid tumor compared to parathyroid adenoma (PA) and atypical parathyroid adenoma (APA). Recent studies have suggested parafibromin has a role in the differential diagnosis of parathyroid tumors. We sought to determine the role of parafibromin as well as galectin-3, Ki-67, and HBME-1 as diagnostic markers in the differential diagnosis of par...
We present a 36 year old female patient with suspected postpartum advanced metastatic cancer and multiple osteolytic lesions due to which she was referred to the Internal medicine clinic for further diagnostic evaluation. After extensive investigation, it was discovered that the underlying condition was a parathyroid gland adenoma and the patient was treated surgically. Clinicians should note t...
Cysts which originated from embryonal remnants are often observed in the cervical region. Among these cysts, branchiogenic cleft cysts and thyroglossal cysts are most commonly encountered. Parathyroid cysts and cervical thymic cysts are known to be a rare entity. Reviewing the world literature of the latter two, only a few reports were noted. There is, in addition, some confusion in terminology...
1. A rapid increase in plasma renin activity occurred in dogs after intravenous administration of parathyroid extract. 2. This was not seen after injection of a purer parathormone preparation, or the solution used to dilute the parathyroid extract or calcitonin. 3. A vasoactive compound in parathyroid extract appears to provide the most likely explantation of this effect.
The case of a 65 year old female with myasthenia gravis and hypercalcaemia is presented. Failure of medical control of the myasthenia necessitated thymectomy at which time parathyroid exploration was also carried out. This revealed parathyroid hyperplasia and a thymoma. This association has not been previously documented in the literature.
1 Department of Medical Oncology, We report a case of inoperable metastatic parathyroid carcinoma involving lifethreatening hypercalcaemia that failed to respond to standard therapy. Our review of available therapeutic modalities showed a paucity of evidence to guide management of patients with these rare tumours. This is the first report of the treatment of malignant hypercalcaemia secondary t...
P arathyromatosis is a multiple hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissue in the neck (1). In rare conditions it can cause hyperparathyroidism (1). It becomes hyperfunctioning after subtotal or total parathyroidectomy due to primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT and sHPT). Palmer et al reported the first case of parathyromatosis (2), and were followed by the report of other 32 cases (1, 3-5)...
BACKGROUND We report an unusual case of a 66-year-old female with a suspicious thoracic outlet mass presenting with severe biochemical hyperparathyroidism and classic hypercalcemic symptoms of renal and bone involvement. CASE PRESENTATION There was clinical suspicion for parathyroid carcinoma, further supported by intra-operative findings. However, the final pathology described a primary hype...
Primary benign tumors of the trachea are uncommon. These tumors may cause tracheal occlusion and lead to a misdiagnosis of asthma. Ectopic parathyroid adenoma (EPA) can be seen anywhere between the mandibular angle and the mediastinum. The distal part of the trachea is a rare location for EPA, and EPA obstructing the endotracheal lumen has not been reported in the literature. We herein describe...
