The purpose of this study was to investigate, in a group of Venezuelan women, the knowledge and understanding of the purpose of the Pap smear and the correlation of this knowledge with their educational level. Women were recruited for a cervical cancer screening program and answered a questionnaire concerning what a Pap smear is used for. Three hundred one women were included in the study. Two ...

Star-PAP is a nuclear non-canonical poly(A) polymerase (PAP) that shows specificity toward mRNA targets. Star-PAP activity is stimulated by lipid messenger phosphatidyl inositol 4,5 bisphoshate (PI4,5P2) and is regulated by the associated Type I phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate 5-kinase that synthesizes PI4,5P2 as well as protein kinases. These associated kinases act as coactivators of Star-PAP...

Protein tyrosine kinase Pyk2 is activated by a variety of G-protein-coupled receptors and by extracellular signals that elevate intracellular Ca2+ concentration. We have identified a new Pyk2 binding protein designated Pap. Pap is a multidomain protein composed of an N-terminal alpha-helical region with a coiled-coil motif, followed by a pleckstrin homology domain, an Arf-GAP domain, an ankyrin...

Helper T cells (Th cells) play a central role in the initiation and maintenance of immune responses, including antitumor immunity. The ability of Th cells in murine models to maintain and enhance the cytolytic efficacy of CD8+ CTLs has led to a renewed interest in identifying human tumor antigens recognized by Th cells. Prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) is a prostate cancer-associated tumor anti...

Pokeweed antiviral protein (PAP), a 29-kDa ribosome-inactivating protein isolated from the leaves of Phytolacca americana, has potent cytotoxic activity once it enters the cytoplasm of a cell. It is incapable of entering cells by itself. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether a GnRH analog could be used to deliver PAP specifically to cells expressing GnRH receptors. D-Lys(6)-GnRH-Pro...

CONTEXT Despite quality assurance standards, Papanicolaou (Pap) test characteristics remain less than optimal. OBJECTIVE To compare the societal costs and benefits of human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, Pap testing, and their combination to screen for cervical cancer. DESIGN, SETTING, AND POPULATION A simulation model of neoplasia natural history was used to estimate the societal costs and ...

We report a rare case of mycotic pulmonary artery pseudoaneurysm (PAP) secondary to a lung abscess due to Streptococcus constellatus. PAP was confirmed by the pathological findings of the pseudoaneurysm, the presence of bacteria, and the microbiological analysis. PAP is uncommon, but it is important to recognize this condition because PAP can lead to fatal hemoptysis.

Thiamine monophosphatase (TMPase, also known as fluoride-resistant acid phosphatase) is a classic histochemical marker of small-diameter dorsal root ganglia neurons. The molecular identity of TMPase is currently unknown. We found that TMPase is identical to the transmembrane isoform of prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP), an enzyme with unknown molecular and physiological functions. We then found ...
