This work describes the first use of a wireless paired emitter detector diode device (PEDD) as an optical sensor for water quality monitoring in a lab-on-a-disc device. The microfluidic platform, based on an ionogel sensing area combined with a low-cost optical sensor, is applied for quantitative pH and qualitative turbidity monitoring of water samples at point-of-need. The autonomous capabilit...

We report bistable operation of a strained-layer InGaAs/GaAs asymmetric Fabry-Perot optical modulator configured as a self-electro-optic effect device (SEED) operating in reflection mode. Bistable loops are observed from 949 to 962 nm with switching powers down to submicrowatt levels. The contrast ratio between on and off states is as large as 5:I (7 dB) and the device will hold in either state...

We demonstrate a device that allows for the coherent analysis of a pair of optical frequency sidebands in an arbitrary basis. We show that our device is quantum noise limited, and hence applications for this scheme may be found in discrete and continuous variable optical quantum information experiments.

Introduction: All-optical storage and signal processing are of intense interest for numerous applications, ranging from true-time delay for antenna remoting to all-optical convolution functions, all-optical signal regeneration, all-optical wavelength conversion, and all-optical buffers. The ability to control the optical group velocity over a wide range with high resolution is critical to enabl...

We present a novel optofluidic device for real-time sorting on the basis of cell mechanical properties, measured by optical stretching. The whole mechanism, based on optical forces, does not hamper the viability of the tested cells, which can be used for further analysis. The device effectiveness is demonstrated by extracting a sample population enriched with highly metastatic cells from a hete...

A 3D-printed microfluidic device was designed and manufactured using a low cost ($2000) consumer grade fusion deposition modelling (FDM) 3D printer. FDM printers are not typically used, or are capable, of producing the fine detailed structures required for microfluidic fabrication. However, in this work, the optical transparency of the device was improved through manufacture optimisation to suc...

The dimension of biomolecules is of few nanometers, so the biomolecular devices ought to be of that range so a better understanding about the performance of the electronic biomolecular devices can be obtained at nanoscale. Development of optical biomolecular device is a new move towards revolution of nano-bioelectronics. Optical biosensor is one of such nano-biomolecular devices that has a pote...

Projection is the process of forming a 2D image from a 3D scene. Perspective projection is formed by rays reflected from the objects through the optical center (or focal center) onto a capturing device (CCD or film). To avoid reversal of the image we usually assume that the capturing device lies in front of the optical center. We form a coordinate system by setting the origin O = (0, 0, 0) at t...
