The effects of femtosecond laser machining on surface characteristics and subsurface microstructure of a Nitinol alloy were studied. The femtosecond laser machining produced an average surface roughness of 0.2 μm. A re-deposited layer of 7 μm and a hardened layer of 70 μm were also resulted from the machining.
Ceramic particles based packed bed systems are attracting the interesting from various high-temperature applications such as thermal energy storage, nuclear cooling reactors, and catalytic support structures. Considering that these work above 600 °C, radiation becomes significant or even major heat transfer mechanism. The use of coatings with different optical properties could represent a way t...
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to evaluate stent compression in iliac vein compression syndrome (IVCS) and to identify its association with stent patency. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between May 2005 and June 2014, after stent placement for the treatment of IVCS with acute ilio-femoral deep vein thrombosis, follow-up CT venography was performed in 48 patients (35 women, 13 men; age range 23-87 ...
Thrombosis of superficial femoral artery (SFA) nitinol stents or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) femoropopliteal bypass grafts after discontinuation of antiplatelet therapy is an emergent clinical challenge of acute limb ischemia (ALI), requiring immediate percutaneous intervention. Currently, there is no evidence-based approach for the management of such complications. We describe the cases of ...
OBJECTIVE To assess the therapeutic outcome after endovascular repair of iliac arterial lesions (IALs) using a self-expandable Nitinol stent graft system. METHODS Between July 2006 and March 2013, 16 patients (13 males, mean age: 68 years) with a self-expandable Nitinol stent graft. A total of 19 lesions were treated: nine true aneurysms, two anastomotic aneurysms, two dissections, one arteri...
PURPOSE To compare aortic intimal thickening of normal and hyperhomocysteinemic pigs (induced with a methionine-rich diet) following placement of a self-expanding nitinol stent. METHODS Eighteen Macau pigs were used. They were older than eight weeks in age and had an average weight of 30 kg. Pigs were randomly divided into two groups. The first, Group C (control), was fed a regular diet, and ...
A 2.7 kg, 11-year-old, castrated male Maltese dog was presented for evaluation of a 2-year history of intractable coughing, dyspnoea and cyanosis. A diagnosis of tracheal collapse with myxomatous mitral valve disease was made on the basis of inspiratory and expiratory thoracic radiographs, fluoroscopy and echocardiography. Measurement for stent size selection was performed on thoracic radiograp...
M an’s long history of technologic development has been marked by a continuing search for improved materials. This effort has resulted in vast arrays of new materials which have affected nearly every aspect of contemporary life, including orthodontics. A significant advance in orthodontic materials was made in the late 1930’s and 1940’s when stainless steel wire and appliances became widely ava...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE To test the feasibility of self-expanding drug-coated nitinol stents for prevention of restenosis in an animal model. Stent implantation in the carotid artery (CA) has been shown to be feasible for treatment of CA stenosis. Even though the restenosis rate in CA is reported to be lower than in the coronary and peripheral arteries, problems may arise with increasing numbers...
Improving the design and performance of medical stents for implantation in the human body is of current interest. This paper describes a study of fatigue-crack propagation behavior in the superelastic alloy Nitinol. Specifically, the objective of this work was to study the effect of environment on cyclic crack-growth resistance in an approximately 50Ni-50Ti (atom %) alloy and to provide the nec...
