Edema factor (EF) is a component of an anthrax toxin that functions as an adenylate cyclase. Numerous monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) have been reported for the other Bacillus anthracis toxin components, but relatively few to EF have been studied. We report the generation of six murine hybridoma lines producing two IgM and four IgG1 MAbs to EF. Of the six MAbs, only one IgM neutralized EF, as assa...

A series of implicit, electrostatic, twoand threedimensional, particle-in-cell simulations are used to model heavy ion beam neutralization and focusing in the Scaled Final Focus Experiment at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The simulations confirm the charge neutralizing effect of electrons introduced into the beam path as the beam is focused and exiting the accelerator.

Progression of human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) infection in children is faster than adults. HIV-1 subtype C is responsible for more than 50% of the infections globally and more than 90% infections in India. To date, there is no effective vaccine against HIV-1. Recent animal studies and human Phase I trials showed promising results of the protective effect of anti-HIV-1 broadly neutr...

A 24-h neutralization test that is based on fluorescent cell counting was used for the detection and quantitative determination of serum-neutralizing antibody against lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. The earliest manifestation of serum-neutralizing antibody in guinea pigs was shown to occur within 1 week after inoculation with lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus. Within 11 weeks, serum-neutra...

A preliminary in vitro acid neutralizing capacity test of twelve traditional Ayurvedic antacids were performed in this study. Five traditional preparations of ash of conch shell, ash of oyster, ash of pearl, limestone, and ash of cowrie showed high acid neutralizing capacity similar to standard antacid combination of Al(OH) 3 and Mg(OH) 2 . Among these the ash of conch shell found the highest a...

A microneutralization test in PK(15) cells was developed to measure the neutralizing antibody response of a group of ponies experimentally challenged with louping ill virus. Viral cytopathic effect was maximal after 6 days of incubation, at which point titration endpoints were clear-cut and readily determinable. The assay compared favorably with the mouse neutralization test for accuracy and ea...

Toxin neutralizing antibodies represent the major mode of protective immunity against a number of toxin-mediated bacterial diseases, including anthrax; however, the cellular mechanisms that lead to optimal neutralizing antibody responses remain ill defined. Here we show that the cellular binding pathway of anthrax protective antigen (PA), the binding component of anthrax toxin, determines the t...

Mucosal T cells are essential to immune tolerance in the intestine, an organ constantly exposed to large amounts of dietary and bacterial Ags. We investigated whether local fibroblasts affect mucosal T cell survival, which is critical for maintenance of immune tolerance. Coculture with autologous fibroblasts significantly increased viability of mucosal T cells by inhibiting IL-2 deprivation- an...

Electromagnetic (EM) fields from cell phones were shown to have a statistically significant detrimental effect on the recovery of human DNA after heat shock. This effect was observed with cell phones (CP) on standby mode when they are emitting relatively weak EM fields and after only minutes of EM field exposure. The detrimental effect of EM energy from cell phones was completely neutralized wh...

the kinetics of catalyst deactivation and coke formation during dehydrogenation of propane over supported pt–based catalysts and, in particular, the effect of alkali metal promoters on catalyst activity and stability were studied. the analysis of propane conversion data showed that there is an optimum level of alkali metal promoter loading for both catalyst activity and stability.a model based ...
