We studied the in-plane magnetic anisotropy of rf ~radio frequency! sputtered @~FeTaN!/~TaN!#n multilayers synthesized on Si substrates. In the multilayers where n55, the FeTaN thickness is fixed at 30 nm and the thickness of TaN, tTaN , is varied from 0 to 6.0 nm, we observed a clear trend that, with increasing tTaN , the values of coercivity, grain size, and amplitude of maximum magnetoresist...

We have fabricated periodic multilayers that comprise either Si/Tb or SiC/Tb bilayers, designed to operate as narrowband reflective coatings near 60 nm wavelength in the extreme ultraviolet (EUV). We find peak reflectance values in excess of 20% near normal incidence. The spectral bandpass of the best Si/Tb multilayer was measured to be 6.5 nm full width at half-maximum (FWHM), while SiC/Tb mul...

The design, preparation, and properties of planar multilayer structures composed of various combinations of sequentially deposited polyelectrolyte (PE) chains and self-assembled layers of individual block copolymer aggregates (vesicles, micelles, or large compound micelles (LCMs)) are described. The aggregates contain negatively or positively charged corona chains while the PE multilayers conta...

Poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS)/poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) multilayers were treated with 1-5 M NaCl solutions, resulting in continuous changes in the physicochemical properties of the multilayers. Significant mass loss was observed when the salt concentration was higher than 2 M and reached as high as 72% in a 5 M NaCl solution. The disassembly occurred initially in ...

We report on the characterization of metallurgical phases and their magnetism at the interfaces of nanoscale MgB(2)/Fe layered structures. MgB(2)/(57)Fe multilayers with varying layer thicknesses were prepared by vacuum deposition and investigated, before and after annealing by electrical resistance measurements, x-ray diffraction and (57)Fe conversion-electron Mössbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) dow...

Whereas Cantor multilayers made of an isotropic dielectric–magnetic material with positive refractive index will show power–law characteristics, low–order Cantor multilayers made of materials with negative refractive index will not exhibit the power– law nature. A reason for this anomalous behavior is presented.

Nano-structural evolution of layer morphology and interfacial roughness in Cr/Sc metal multilayers grown with ion assistance during magnetron sputter deposition has been investigated by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and hard X-ray reflectivity. Calculations based on a binary collision model predict an ion-assisted growth window for optimized Cr/Sc multilayer interface sharpne...

Self-assembled multilayers were fabricated from lignosulfonate (LS) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDAC), and the adsorption and desorption behaviors of LS on the LS/PDAC multilayers under different pH conditions were intensively investigated. Results showed that the adsorption and desorption behaviors were controlled by electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, and change...

A novel glucose-responsive controlled release of insulin system is constructed through coating enzyme multilayers on mesoporous silica particles (MSPs). The MSPs serve as the drug reservoir, and the enzyme multilayers cross-linked with glutaraldehyde act as a valve to control the release of insulin in response to the external glucose level.

PURPOSE To evaluate the interfacial properties of ex vivo tear lipid multilayers with controlled and varying thickness. The influence of lysozyme and surfactant-containing multipurpose lens care solution (MPS) on interfacial rheology of lipids and mixed lipid-protein films were studied. METHODS Lipids were extracted from lotrafilcon A lenses worn continuously for 1 month. Interfacial properti...
