In this paper we study the relationship between the Euclidean and the discrete space. We study discrete operations based on Euclidean functions: the discrete smooth scaling and the discrete-continuous rotation. Conversely, we study Euclidean operations based on discrete functions: the discrete based simplification, the Euclideandiscrete union and the Euclidean-discrete co-refinement. These oper...

Researchers in the (digital) humanities have identified a large potential in the use of automatic text analysis capabilities in their text studies, scaling up the amount of material that can be explored and allowing for new types of questions. To support the scholars’ specific research questions, it is important to embed the text analysis capabilities in an appropriate navigation and visualizat...

An ensemble of pure numbers of the order of 10 is produced naturally from the fundamental parameters of modern cosmology. This new large-number coincidence problem is resolved by demonstrating implicit physical connections that follow from the standard cosmological model. However, the occurrence of the new large-number coincidence combined with the known coincidence among pure numbers of the or...

Constrained multidimensional scaling was put on a firm theoretical basis by Jan De Leeuw and Willem Heiser in the 1980's. There is a simple method of fitting, based on distance via innerproducts, and a numerically more complicated one that is truly based on least-squares on distances. The unconstrained forms are known as principal coordinate analysis and nonmetric multidimensional scaling, resp...

We calculate mud =(mu+md)/2, ms, fπ and fK in the quenched continuum limit with UV-filtered overlap fermions. We see rather small scaling violations on lattices as coarse as a ≃ 1GeV and conjecture that similar advantages would be manifest in unquenched studies.

The opinion dynamics of economic agents is modeled with the link structure influenced by the resulting opinions: Links between people of nearly the same opinion are more stable than those between people of vastly different opinions. A simple scaling law describes the number of surviving final opinion as a function of the numbers of agents and of possible opinions.

Subjects rated the (dis)similarity of paired voice samples on a nine-point scale. The short voice samples were taken from the DyViS database of young male speakers with ‘Standard Southern British’ pronunciation. Accent was thus controlled, and ratings can be presumed to tap perceived personal voice quality differences. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) was applied to the ratings to derive five pse...
