This study reports a cost-effective method of replicating glass microfluidic chips using a vitreous carbon (VC) stamp. A glass replica with the required microfluidic microstructures was synthesized without etching. The replication method uses a VC stamp fabricated by combining thermal replication using a furan-based, thermally-curable polymer with carbonization. To test the feasibility of this ...

We describe a novel method of generating monodisperse subfemtoliter aqueous droplets on demand by means of piezoelectric injection. Droplets with volumes down to 200 aL are generated by this technique. The droplets are injected into a low refractive index perfluorocarbon so that they can be optically trapped. We demonstrate the use of optical tweezers to manipulate and mix droplets. For example...

A core-shell gelatin-alginate composite used for intestine-released oral delivery drug carrier was synthesized through microfluidic technique. At the fixed continuous phase flow rate, the size of the core-shell gelatin-alginate microparticles increases with the dispersed phase flow rate, and monodispersity can be retained (the variation coefficient for the diameter distribution can be kept less...

Much of the interest in noble metal nanoparticles is due to their plasmonic resonance responses and local field enhancement, both of which can be tuned through the size and shape of the particles. However, both properties suffer from the loss of monodispersity that is frequently associated with various morphologies of nanoparticles. Here we show a method to generate diverse and monodisperse ani...

We investigate the physical reasons underlying the high monodispersity of empty virus capsids assembled in thermodynamical equilibrium in conditions of favorable pH and ionic strength. We propose that the high fidelity of the assembly results from the effective spontaneous curvature of the viral protein assemblies and the corresponding bending rigidity that penalizes curvatures which are larger...

Self-assembly of three dimensional nucleic acid nanostructures is of great significance in nanotechnology, biosensing and biomedicine. Herein we present a novel class of multifunctional and programmable DNA nanostructures, termed nanospheres (NSs), with monodispersity, dense compaction and uniform size (∼ 200 nm) using only four DNAs based on not only Watson-Crick base pair hybridization betwee...

This paper describes a whole cell sensor using E. coli entrapped within photocrosslinked hydrogel beads. Hydrogel beads containing organophosphorus hydrolase (OPH)-expressed E. coli were prepared by adding a hydrogel precursor solution containing the E. coli to an oil phase using a precision syringe pump, forming droplets, and photopolymerizing them. The beads showed good monodispersity with an...

The dispersion stability of CeO 2 suspensions limits their widespread use in IC manufacturing because unstable slurries can be very damaging to the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) flattening process. Therefore, this study is based on wet ball milling synergy with agents improve slurry. Different organic acids were used as adjusting agents, including acetic acid, propionic lactic and phytic ...

Spatially ordered arrangements of spherical colloids are known to exhibit structural colours. The intensity and brilliance these colours typically improve with colloidal monodispersity, low concentrations point line defects increasing refractive index contrast between the embedding medium. Here we show that suspensions charge stabilised, fluorinated latex particles refractive-index their aqueou...
