molA (HI1472) from H. influenzae encodes a periplasmic binding protein (PBP) that delivers substrate to the ABC transporter MolB(2)C(2) (formerly HI1470/71). The structures of MolA with molybdate and tungstate in the binding pocket were solved to 1.6 and 1.7 Å resolution, respectively. The MolA-binding protein binds molybdate and tungstate, but not other oxyanions such as sulfate and phosphate,...

Phthalocyanines (Pcs) bearing phosphonic acid groups at the periphery exhibit a potential photodynamic effect to induce phototoxicity on human bladder cancer epithelial cells (UM-UC-3). In vitro photophysical and biological studies show high intrinsic ability to inhibit the activity of urokinase plasminogen activator (uPA) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9).

Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus produced ethylene during early growth. However, the onset of toxin biosynthesis was marked by the absence of ethylene evolution. 2-Chloroethyl phosphonic acid, an ethylene-generating compound, inhibited aflatoxin biosynthesis in vivo. The reciprocal relationship between the production of aflatoxin and ethylene by the organism may indicate the invol...

The Rh(I) complex of a monodentate phosphoramidite bearing a primary amine moiety (DpenPhos) has been disclosed to be highly efficient for the asymmetric hydrogenation of a variety of α- or β-acyloxy α,β-unsaturated phosphonates, providing the corresponding biologically important chiral α- or β-hydroxy phosphonic acid derivatives with excellent enantioselectivities (90->99% ee).

In this communication we report on the base catalyzed Michael addition of the hydroxy methyl side groups in polyglycidol to diethyl vinyl phosphonate. Hydrolysis of the diethyl phosphonato ethyl side groups with bromotrimethylsilane leads to a new class of polyglycidols with pendant phosphonic acid groups.

Electrodes in dye sensitised solar cells are typically nanocrystalline anatase TiO2 with a majority (1 0 1) surface exposed. Generally the sensitising dye employs a carboxylic anchoring moiety through which it adheres to the TiO₂ surface. Recent interest in exploiting the properties of differing TiO₂ electrode morphologies, such as rutile nanorods exposing the (1 1 0) surface and anatase electr...

Fosfomycin, [L-(cis)-1, 2-epoxypropyl phosphonic acid] (FOM), a broad spectrum antibiotic produced by some strains of Streptomyces species1), acts as a phosphoenolpyruvate analog and irreversibly inhibits phosphoenolpyruvate UDP-N-acetylglucosamine (UDPG1cNAc)-3-O-enolpyruvyl transferase, an enzyme which catalyzes the first step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis2). FOM enters susceptible bacteria b...

Size selective growth of palladium nano-particles 2-7 nm in diameter on the surface of carbon nano-onions (CNOs) (derived from catalytic cracking of methane) in water involves pretreating the CNOs with p-phosphonic acid calix[8]arene then H(2)PdCl(4) followed by dynamic thin film processing under hydrogen in a vortex fluidic device.

The O-tosylsalicylamide S3I-201 (10) was used as a starting point for design and synthesis of novel STAT-3 dimerization inhibitors with improved drug-like qualities. The phosphonic acid 12d and salicylic acids 13f, 13g with a shorter amide linker lacking the O-tosyl group had improved STAT-3 inhibitory activity. The equivalent potencies observed by the replacement of phosphonic acid moiety of 1...
