A single multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme was developed for precise characterization of the opportunistic pathogens of Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC), a group composed of at least nine closely related species. Seven conserved housekeeping genes were selected after a comparison of five Burkholderia species, and a collection of strains was subjected to nucleotide sequence analysis usi...

We evaluated three multilocus sequence typing (MLST) schemes for Staphylococcus epidermidis and selected the seven most discriminatory loci for the formation of a new, more powerful MLST scheme. This improved scheme gave 31 sequence types (STs) and 5 clonal complexes (CCs), whereas the other schemes delineate 16 to 24 STs and 1 to 3 CCs.

Lactococcus lactis phage infections are costly for the dairy industry because they can slow down the fermentation process and adversely impact product safety and quality. Although many strategies have been developed to better control phage populations, new virulent phages continue to emerge. Thus, it is beneficial to develop an efficient method for the routine identification of new phages withi...

Lactobacillus plantarum is a species of considerable industrial and medical interest. To date, the lack of reliable molecular methods for definite identification at strain level has hindered studies of the population biology of this organism. Here, a multilocus sequence typing (MLST) system for this organism is described, which exploits the genetic variation present in six housekeeping loci to ...

Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) systems have been reported previously for multiple food- and food animal-associated Campylobacter species (e.g., C. jejuni, C. coli, C. lari, and C. fetus) to both differentiate strains and identify clonal lineages. These MLST methods focused primarily on campylobacters of human clinical (e.g., C. jejuni) or veterinary (e.g., C. fetus) relevance. However, other...

Among insects, Wolbachia is an exceedingly common bacterial endosymbiont with a range of consequences infection. Despite the frequency infection, very little known about this bacteria’s diversity and role within hosts, especially ant hosts. In study, we analyze occurrence across spiny ants (Polyrhachis), large geographically diverse genus. Polyrhachis samples from throughout host genus’ phyloge...

The choice of adequate methods for epidemiological purposes remains a challenging problem in Neisseria gonorrhoeae molecular monitoring. In this study, the collection of geographically unrelated gonococci (n = 103) isolated in Russian clinics was comparably tested by (i) a traditional serotyping scheme, (ii) por typing, (iii) Neisseria gonorrhoeae multiantigen sequence typing (NG-MAST), and (iv...

Typhoid fever, caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi, remains an important public health burden in Southeast Asia and other endemic countries. Various genotyping methods have been applied to study the genetic variations of this human-restricted pathogen. Multilocus sequence typing (MLST) is one of the widely accepted methods, and recently, there is a growing interest in the re-application...
