To the Editor, Papendorp et al. described a patient with disseminated Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection after steroid use. The case underscores the necessity of a complete travel history before starting high-dose steroids. I would like to point out that Strongyloides has also been endemic in areas...

Minesweeper is a simple one−player computer game commonly found on machines with popular operating systems such as Linux or Microsoft Windows. The game consists of a 2 dimensional rectangular playing field (or board) where some known number of mines have been hidden. Initially, all of the squares on the board are "covered up" and no information is given to indicate the location of the mines. Th...

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has surgically treated 49 946 war wounded from all sides of the Afghan conflict. Two hospitals were established in Peshawar (1981) and Quetta (1983) on the Afghan border of Pakistan and inside Afghanistan in Kabul (1988). One quarter of all war wounded were injured as a result of antipersonnel mines. In 1980 a UN weapons convention adopted spe...

Treated effluent discharge from uranium (U) mines and mills elevates the concentrations of U, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and sulfate (SO4 (2-) ) above natural levels in receiving waters. Many investigations on the effect of hardness on U toxicity have been experiments on the combined effects of changes in hardness, pH, and alkalinity, which do not represent water chemistry downstream of U mi...

A mine is basically a weapon that can't move and can only attack a target by blowing itself up, a rather primitive approach to warfare. Being required neither to move nor to project power at a distance, mines are relatively cheap; a mine may cost thousands of dollars while a missile or torpedo of equivalent destructive power would cost hundreds of thousands. Being cheap and available on the int...

Harnessing hydrogen competently through wastewater treatment using a particular class of biocatalyst is indeed a challenging issue. Therefore, biohydrogen potential of real-field wastewater was evaluated by hybrid fermentative process in a single-stage process. The cumulative hydrogen production (CHP) was observed to be higher with distillery wastewater (271 mL) than with dairy wastewater (248 ...

In this work, Chlorella sp. (UM6151) was selected to treat meat processing wastewater for nutrient removal and biomass production. To balance the nutrient profile and improve biomass yield at low cost, an innovative algae cultivation model based on wastewater mixing was developed. The result showed that biomass yield (0.675-1.538 g/L) of algae grown on mixed wastewater was much higher than that...

Based on the increasing pressure on the water environment, this study aims to clarify the overall status of wastewater discharge in China, including the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of wastewater discharge and its driving factors, so as to provide reference for developing "emission reduction" strategies in China and discuss regional sustainable development and resources environm...

In this paper five different sensor data fusion options for the detection of anti-personnel land-mines are presented. The performance of these options are evaluated in a case study of estimated figures for mines and possible false alarm generating objects. Dempster-Shafer with proper mappings and rule based fusion provided the best result and an improvement over single sensor solutions.
