A low-cost, solution-processed, versatile, microfluidic approach is developed for patterning structures of highly conductive metals (e.g., copper, silver, and nickel) on chemically modified flexible polyethylene terephthalate thin films by in situ polymer-assisted electroless metal deposition. This method has significantly lowered the consumption of catalyst as well as the metal plating solution.
The aim of this study was to investigate the possible benefit of large-head metal-on-metal bearing on a stem for primary hip replacement compared with a 28 mm diameter conventional metal-on-polyethylene bearing in a prospective randomised controlled trial. We investigated cemented stem behaviour between these two different bearings using Einzel-Bild-Röntgen-Analyse, clinical and patient reporte...
Metal and in particular noble metal nanoparticles represent a very special class of materials which can be applied as prepared or as composite materials. In most of the cases, two main properties are exploited in a vast number of publications: biocompatibility and surface plasmon resonance (SPR). For instance, these two important properties are exploitable in plasmonic diagnostics, bioactive gl...
OBJECTIVE In uncemented revision total hip replacement due to polyethylene wear, the metal cup needs to be maintained when its stability is checked during surgery, only replacing the polyethylene that is cemented if anchoring is not possible. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the medium-term clinical and radiological results of a polyethylene liner cemented into an osseointegrated ac...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Little is known about the long-term outcome of cemented metal-on-metal hip arthroplasties. We evaluated a consecutive series of metal-on-metal polyethylene-backed cemented hip arthroplasties implanted in patients under 60 years of age. METHODS 109 patients (134 joint replacements) were followed prospectively for mean 9 (7-11) years. The evaluation included clinical scor...
Background: Since wear component of prosthetic metal-polyethylene couple is directly related to the patient activity level, it is logical to advise operated patients against participation in long and strenuous physical activities. The purpose of this study was to compare the type, level, and frequency of sports activities performed after resurfacing hip arthroplasty (RH) or total hip arthroplas...
A novel 12-station hip joint simulator with an anatomic position of the prosthesis was designed and built. The motion of the simulator consists of flexion-extension and abduction-adduction. The load is of the double-peak type. The validation test was done with three similar 28 mm CoCr-polyethylene joints in diluted calf serum lubricant for 3.3 x 10(6) cycles. The bearing surfaces of the polyeth...
The ideal acetabular component is characterised by reliable, long-term fixation with physiological loading of bone and a low rate of wear. Trabecular metal is a porous construct of tantalum which promotes bony ingrowth, has a modulus of elasticity similar to that of cancellous bone, and should be an excellent material for fixation. Between 2004 and 2006, 55 patients were randomised to receive e...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Following metal-on-metal hip arthroplasty (THA), immunological reactions including changes in lymphocyte populations, aseptic loosening, and lymphocytic pseudotumors occur. We hypothesized that changes in lymphocyte subpopulations would be associated with elevated metal ion concentrations. METHODS A randomized trial involving 85 patients matched for age and sex and rand...
