Serratia marcescens strains from three hospitals in the city of New York were tested for antibiotic susceptibility patterns and the presence of transmissible antibiotic resistance factors. There appears to be a pattern characteristic for each hospital with regard to the sensitivity to nalidixic acid, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and sulfonamides, whereas the resistance to ampicillin, cephalot...

Protection against experimental Serratia marcescens infection in mice was enhanced by prior injection of formalin-killed or viable bacteria of the same strain. From the first to the fourth week after vaccination, specific immunity was involved in the host defence against systemic serratia infection. The transfer of antiserum specific for S. marcescens increased bacterial clearance from the live...

ABSTRACT The bacterium that causes cucurbit yellow vine disease (CYVD) has been placed in the species Serratia marcescens based on 16S rDNA and groE sequence analysis. However, phenotypic comparison of the organism with S. marcescens strains isolated from a variety of ecological niches showed significant heterogeneity. In this study, we compared the genomic DNA of S. marcescens strains from dif...

The uptakes of norfloxacin by quinolone-resistant and -susceptible strains of Serratia marcescens were almost the same and 50% inhibitory concentrations for DNA gyrase and the MICs of quinolones were correlated, suggesting that DNA gyrase alterations are the basis of quinolone resistance.

We propose 'the moving target hypothesis' to describe the aetiology of a contemporary coral disease that differs from that of its historical disease state. Hitting the target with coral disease aetiology is a complex pursuit that requires understanding of host and environment, and may lack a single pathogen solution. White pox disease (WPX) affects the Caribbean coral Acropora palmata. Acropori...

During an outbreak of Serratia marcescens infections at our hospital, we discovered widespread contamination of the 2% chlorhexidine hand-washing solution by S. marcescens. Examination by electron microscopy of the sides of bottles in which this solution was stored revealed that microorganisms were embedded in a fibrous matrix. Bacteria, free in the liquid, were morphologically abnormal, showin...

The combination of polymyxin B and rifampin resulted in an additive effect against all 12 clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens examined, including multiple-drug-resistant isolates.

Here we report on the draft genome sequence of Serratia marcescens strain MCB associated with Oscheius sp. MCB (Nematoda: Rhabditidae) isolated from South African soil. S. marcescens strain MCB has 5,304,212-bp genome size with 4,877 genes and a G+C content of 59.1%.

The contribution of the cell-bound hemolysin of Serratia marcescens to uropathogenicity was studied in an experimental urinary tract infection in rats. The strain carrying the Serratia hemolysin colonized the urinary tract more and lead to a stronger inflammatory response compared to the isogenic hemolysin negative strain.
