43 Introduction: Lymphedema, a common complication of cancer treatment, is characterized by 44 inflammation, fibrosis, and adipose deposition. We previously have shown that macrophage 45 infiltration is increased in mouse models of lymphedema. Because macrophages are regulators of 46 lymphangiogenesis and fibrosis, this study aimed to determine the role of these cells in lymphedema 47 using dep...

Infection in patients with lymphedema may present in a variety of ways. OBJECTIVE The goals of this review were to standardize the terminology of skin breakdown in the context of lymphedema, synthesize t...

Although lymphedema is a common clinical condition, treatment for this disabling condition remains limited and largely ineffective. Recently, it has been reported that overexpression of VEGF-C correlates with increased lymphatic vessel growth (lymphangiogenesis). However, the effect of VEGF-C-induced lymphangiogenesis on lymphedema has yet to be demonstrated. Here we investigated the impact of ...

Swelling or lymphedema of the limb, trunk, or breast is considered the most problematic and dreaded concern after treatment for breast cancer and has significant physical, psychological, and social ramifications. Lymphedema can appear after lymphadenectomy and radiotherapy for cancer treatment of the breast. The reported incidence of lymphedema, which can occur many years after the initial treatment, varies due to different methods of long follow-up. Patients requiring more extensive breast cancer treatment with axillary lymph node dissection and radiation have the greatest risk for development of lymph...

The findings support the use of compression garments and compression bandaging for reducing lymphedema volume in upper and lower extremity cancer-related lymphedema. Specific to breast cancer, a statistically significant, clinically small beneficial effect was found from the addition of manual lymph drainage massage to compression therapy for upper extremity lymphedema volume.

Lymphangiogenesis is considered a promising approach for increasing fluid drainage during secondary lymphedema. However, organization of lymphatics into functional capillaries may be dependent upon interstitial flow (IF). The present study was undertaken to determine the importance of lymphangiogenesis for lymphedema resolution. We created a lymphatic obstruction that produces lymphedema in mou...

PURPOSE Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a common and debilitating side effect of cancer treatment. This randomized trial compared the effect of progressive resistance- or aerobic-based exercise on breast cancer-related lymphedema extent and severity, as well as participants' muscular strength and endurance, aerobic fitness, body composition, upper-body function, and quality of life. METHO...
