The time it takes an enzyme to complete its reaction is a stochastic quantity governed by thermal fluctuations. With the advent of high-resolution methods of single-molecule manipulation and detection, it is now possible to observe directly this natural variation in the enzymatic cycle completion time and extract kinetic information from the statistics of its fluctuations. To this end, the inve...

The style and evolution of tectonics on the terrestrial planets differ substantially. The style is related to the thickness of the lithosphere and to whether the lithosphere is divided into distinct, mobile plates that can be recycled into the mantle, as on Earth, or is a single spherical shell, as on the moon, Mars, and Mercury. The evolution of a planetary lithosphere and the development of p...

In this paper we continue the study begun by Kawohl and Sweers of the precise constant at which the elastic foundation supporting a bending plate can allow lift-off in the case of downward loading. We provide a number of numerical results and a rigorous result on a different counterexample than the one suggested in Kawohl and Sweers (2002). Important open problems are summarized at the conclusion.

We revisit some aspects of the interpretation of dynamic force spectroscopy experiments. The standard theory predicts that the typical unbinding force f* is linearly proportional to the logarithm of the loading rate r when a single energy barrier controls the unbinding process. For a more complex situation of N barriers, it predicts at most N linear segments for the f* vs. log(r) curve, each se...

Simple methods to quantify ground reaction forces (GRFs) outside a laboratory setting are needed to understand daily loading sustained by the body. Here, we present methods to estimate peak vertical GRF (pGRFvert) and peak braking GRF (pGRFbrake) in adults using raw hip activity monitor (AM) acceleration data. The purpose of this study was to develop a statistically based model to estimate pGRF...

The quantum emulation of spin-momentum coupling, a crucial ingredient for the emergence of topological phases, is currently drawing considerable interest. In previous quantum gas experiments, typically two atomic hyperfine states were chosen as pseudospins. Here, we report the observation of a spin-momentum coupling achieved by loading a Bose-Einstein condensate into periodically driven optical...

Data on 74 trailer loads of finishing pigs (mean BW = 129.0, SEM = 0.63 kg) from wean-to-finish buildings on 2 farms within 1 production system were collected to investigate the effect of amount of floor space on the trailer (0.39 or 0.48 m2/pig) during transport on the incidence of losses (dead and nonambulatory pigs) at the packing plant and to study the relationships between transport condit...

We derive expressions for shock formation based on the local curvature of the flow characteristics during dynamic compression. Given a specific ramp adiabat, calculated for instance from the equation of state for a substance, the ideal nonlinear shape for an applied ramp loading history can be determined. We discuss the region affected by lateral release, which can be presented in compact form ...

The sliding of a solid object on a solid substrate requires a shear force that is larger than the maximum static friction force. It is commonly believed that the maximum static friction force is proportional to the loading force and does not depend on the apparent contact area. The ratio of the maximum static friction force to the loading force is called the static friction coefficient µM, whic...

The highest elevation of the Tibetan Plateau, lying 5,700 m above sea level, occurs within the part of the Lhasa block immediately north of the India-Tibet suture zone (Yarlung Zangbo suture zone, YZSZ), being 700 m higher than the maximum elevation of more northern parts of the plateau. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain this differentially higher topography and the rock uplift t...
