Parasitic infections are generally regarded as the most prevalent and important health problems of grazing ruminants in Australia, with losses associated with nematodes, and ectoparasites causing a combined annual loss of approximately a billion dollars (McLeod 1995). Liver fluke, although having a restricted distribution in temperate regions has been estimated to cost upwards of $100 million (...

Knowledge of the population dynamics of parasites and their hosts is essential to build veterinary and health programs. The example chosen is that of Fasciola hepatica, a food-borne trematode responsible for severe human and animal infections on the five continents. In this paper, we review the relationships between the liver fluke and its intermediate (mollusc) and definitive (vertebrate) hosts.

The visualization of vector occurrence in space and time is an important aspect of studying vector-borne diseases. Detailed maps of possible vector habitats provide valuable information for the prediction of infection risk zones but are currently lacking for most parts of the world. Nonetheless, monitoring vector habitats from the finest scales up to farm level is of key importance to refine cu...

The investigation was aimed to identify the risk factors and gross pathology of liver fluke infection in cattle in Netrokona district of Bangladesh during November 2008 to October 2009. Faecal samples from 350 cattle were examined microscopically using Modified Stoll’s ova counting method, 109 (31.14%) were found positive for Fasciola gigantica and mean eggs per gram of faeces (EPG) were 133.03...
