Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) capable of detecting and differentiating Plasmodium species are needed in areas in which microscopy is unsuitable. This study was conducted to assess the diagnostic performance of the rapid test kit - SD BIOLINE Malaria Ag Pf/Pan(r) (05FK60) in an endemic area. Microscopy of Giemsa-stained blood films were performed to detect and estimate the Plasmodium density in ...
A sequential silver-Giemsa (SG) procedure is presented, initially to stain the p11 and q11 euchromatic bands and subsequently the q12 heterochromatic band of the human Y chromosomes. A three sub-band division of the q11 band can be identified. The same technique differentially stains the secondary constriction of chromosome 9 as well as most other satellite III DNA regions of the human karyotype.
The differential white cell counts produced by the Technicon H*1 Autoanalyser in profoundly leucopenic specimens were compared with those carried out by manual differential counting by light microscopy of peripheral blood smears stained with May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain. The correlation achieved allowed the H*1 derived differential count to be reported with confidence.
A patient with long-standing urticaria pigmentosa presented with a pea-sized reddish to purplish papule on the posterior part of the right ear. Histopathologic examination revealed numerous dilated vascular structures in the upper dermis and mast cell infiltrations throughout the whole dermis, consistent with combined mastocytoma-hemangioma. The mast cells were strongly positive with Giemsa stain.
A Romanowsky type (Diff-3) stain was used for identifying Helicobacter pylori in gastric biopsy specimens from 50 patients with ulcer and non-ulcer dyspepsia. Air dried smears were prepared from fresh biopsy tissue and histological sections were prepared from paraffin wax processed tissue. The Diff-3 technique is accomplished in five steps and takes about 30 seconds. Results using the Diff-3 st...
OBJECTIVE To determine the reliability of a rapid hematology stain for the cytological analysis of induced sputum samples. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study comparing the standard technique (May-Grünwald-Giemsa stain) with a rapid hematology stain (Diff-Quik). Of the 50 subjects included in the study, 21 had asthma, 19 had COPD, and 10 were healthy (controls). From the induced sputum s...
A 68-year-old man presented with pain and malaise. Laboratory studies showed pancytopenia, hypercalcemia, increased creatinine, and proteinuria. Serum protein electrophoresis revealed an M-spike (0.2 g/dL) and immunofixation confirmed l-light chain. Bone marrow showed sheets of l-light chain restricted plasma cells with readily identifiable extracellular hexagonal crystals on aspirate and biops...
A 37-year-old man of Pakistani origin presented with a 5-week history of fever, night sweats, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, lymphadenopathy, and splenomegaly. He had similar symptoms 5 years prior with a cervical lymph node (LN) biopsy showing histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or Kikuchi disease (KD). He had pancytopenia, with a neutrophil count of 0.52 3 10/L, hemoglobin count of 76 g/L, mean...
