In this paper we study a question related to the classical Erdős–Ko–Rado theorem, which states that any family of k-element subsets of the set [n] = {1, . . . , n} in which any two sets intersect, has cardinality at most (︀ n−1 k−1 )︀ . We say that two non-empty families are A,B ⊂ (︀[n] k )︀ are s-cross-intersecting, if for any A ∈ A, B ∈ B we have |A ∩ B| ≥ s. In this paper we determine the ma...

The knowledge society brings its own challenges and demands upon its citizens. Key amongst these is the need to empower people to become lifelong learners, to reflect upon their own learning, to become problem solvers and to appreciate technology. This paper records the experiences of an innovative project using a constructionist Mindtool approach in a module on logic, robotics, and programming...

The series constitute ‘ideas in progress,’ after the notion described by I.J. Good in ‘The Scientist Speculates.’ Good also describes ideas about ideas as ‘partly baked ideas’ believing that “ ... it is often better to be stimulating and wrong than boring and right.” While the papers do not take this tenet as an excuse for licence at the expense of rigour, they are exploratory and the ideas may...

We show that Ossa’s theorem splitting ku∧BV for elementary abelian groups V follows from general facts about ku∧BZ/2 and Adams covers. For completeness, we also provide the analogous results for ko ∧BV .

Although information technology (IT) is used extensively in the education of all disciplines, the computing-related fields are facing tremendous challenges, such as declining student enrollment and a lack of representation from minorities and women. Strengthening the connection between computing and other fields could help instructors to integrate IT in their teaching and to support the learnin...

The “digital society” provides not only with new technology, but also with new concepts. Information plays a central role and becomes a valuable good, but knowledge cannot be reduced to information, and one aim for educators is to contribute in a “knowledge society”, not only an “information society”. A knowledge society is structured in networks, enriching the traditional hierarchies; a knowle...

Arabic language and writing are now facing a resurgence of international normative solutions that challenge most of their local or network based operating principles. Even if the multilingual digital coding solutions, especially those proposed by Unicode, have solved many difficulties of Arabic writing, the linguistic aspect is still in search of more adapted solutions. Terminology is one of th...

It is very significant to the knowledge society to accumulate spoken documents on the web. However, because of the high redundancy of spontaneous speech, the faithfully transcribed text is not readable on an Internet browser, and therefore not suitable as a web document. This paper proposes a technique for converting spoken documents into web documents for the purpose of building a speech archi...

Electronization or knowledgization is under way in society, world-over. This process works the transformation of the industrial society into knowledge society, and requires a new level of border-crossing cooperation – and catalyzing of the same. This exploratory study seeks to make sense of catalyzing aimed at generating new knowledge on e-business by turning research initiatives stemming from ...

We study the possibility of the existence of a Katona type proof for the Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for 2and 3-intersecting families of sets. An Erdős-Ko-Rado type theorem for 2-intersecting integer arithmetic progressions and a model theoretic argument show that such an approach works in the 2-intersecting case.
