The final step in heme utilization and iron acquisition in many pathogens is the oxidative cleavage of heme by heme oxygenase (HO), yielding iron, biliverdin, and carbon monoxide. Thus, the essential requirement for iron suggests that HO may provide a potential therapeutic target for antimicrobial drug development. Computer-aided drug design (CADD) combined with experimental assays identified s...
PLoS Biology | http://biology.plosjournals.org Virtually all cells and organisms require iron to perform basic cellular processes. In respiration, iron proteins capture energy released from oxidation of food by synthesizing high-energy compounds, such as NADH, that are used to fuel cellular metabolism. Iron also enables hemoglobin in red blood cells to bind and transport oxygen to tissues throu...
New CO-releasing molecules, CO-RMs, based on indenyl iron carbonyls have been identified. Half-lives for carbon monoxide (CO) release, (1)H NMR, (13)C NMR, IR, mass spectra, elemental analysis and biological data have been determined for the compounds. Limited correlations have been made between half-lives and ΔG(‡) for CO release and spectroscopic parameters, ν(CO) and δ((13)CO). X-ray structu...
A series of bidentate hydroxypyridinone iron chelators that have therapeutic potential as oral iron chelators, have been studied systematically to determine which properties are the most critical for the mobilization of hepatocyte iron. The relationship between lipid solubility of the free and complexed forms of each chelator and hepatocyte iron release has been investigated as well as the cont...
fischer-tropsch catalysts with high activity and selectivity for olefins were produced using mordenite type sio2/al2o3= 12, 20, 28, 62 zeolite supported iron carbonyl compounds and were characterized by x-ray powder diffraction. the adsorptionof volatile fe(co)5 on the support surface was carried out under vacuum at room temperature. reduction les were monitored by vibrating sample magnetometer...
Sir, We read with interest the article by Kosch et al. w1x comparing the i.v. infusion of iron sucrose with iron gluconate in patients on haemodialysis. Although this study provides some direct comparative analysis between two forms of parenteral iron compounds, the implication that iron sucrose being a monthly bolus dose might be better than the more frequently, Nephrol Dial Transplant (2002) ...
Pyrolysis of iron-phenanthroline complexes supported on carbon leads to highly selective catalysts for the reduction of structurally diverse nitroarenes to anilines in 90-99% yields. Excellent chemoselectivity for the nitro group reduction is demonstrated.
Sulfur and iron co-doped titanoniobate nanosheets were prepared and evaluated in alcoholysis of styrene epoxide. The resultant co-doped catalyst exhibited excellent catalytic performance (yield of 99% with methanol as the nucleophile in only 1 h at room temperature) and may act as a promising candidate in many acid-catalyzed reactions.
The ability of 3-hydroxypyridin-4-ones (CP), a family of bidentate orally effective iron chelators, to remove iron and to prevent iron-induced lipid peroxidation was studied in beating rat myocardial cells in culture. The iron (III) binding constant (log beta 3) of all CP compounds is 36, but their lipophilicity may be modified by altering the length of the R2 substituent on the ring nitrogen. ...
In this study, we monitored and compared the uptake of iron in the fungus Ustilago maydis by using biomimetic siderophore analogs of ferrichrome, the fungal native siderophore, and ferrioxamine B (FOB), a xenosiderophore. Ferrichrome-iron was taken up at a higher rate than FOB-iron. Unlike ferrichrome-mediated uptake, FOB-mediated iron transport involved an extracellular reduction mechanism. By...
