Strong evidence exists of a downward secular trend in the age at menarche; which appears to be associated with improved health and nutritional circumstances over the past two centuries. The aim of this study was to determine the mean age at menarche of Irish girls in 2006, as this has not been verified since 1986. A nationally representative sample of Irish girls (n = 4720, age 10-18 years) was...

Using a gravity model, we estimate the magnitude of potential trade flows between Ireland and the five CEEC countries currently negotiating accession to the EU. We find that Irish exports were already close to their “normal” level in 1994, but that imports from the CEECs were still only half of their “normal” size. The value of estimated “normal” trade corresponds to 0.8 percent of Irish GNP. T...

INTRODUCTION The present study examined indoor air quality in a global sample of smoke-free and smoking-permitted Irish pubs. We hypothesized that levels of respirable suspended particles, an important marker of secondhand smoke, would be significantly lower in smoke-free Irish pubs than in pubs that allowed smoking. METHODS Indoor air quality was assessed in 128 Irish pubs in 15 countries be...

Ireland's economy has made an outstanding progress in the last 40 years goingfrom a relatively poor country to the present EU average per capita income. The Irish economy was deliberately opened around 1960, after decades of following an import-substitution industrialisation policy. The Irish government established an agency for attracting FDI and decided to apply for membership in the EEe. Bef...

In this paper we describe the appraisal method that was developed by Lero (the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre) and Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) to assess software processes within small to medium-sized Irish software organisations that have little or no experience of software process improvement (SPI) programmes. We developed a method, called Adept, through investigating t...

Ireland’s economy has experienced phenomenal growth over the last ten years, in particular in the ICT sector. With today’s rising global competition, Ireland faces the challenge of sustaining this growth, particularly in the software sector. A core component of this challenge is to produce a steady stream of qualified graduates in the ICT area. Funded by the Irish government, Lero—the Irish Sof...

This paper uses a multivariate vector error-correction generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model to investigate the effect of British grain prices on their Irish equivalents. We find that in the long run the law of one price holds and in the short run the model captures the salient features of Irish grain prices. The model is used to compute rolling forecasts of the condit...
