Schönlein-Henoch purpura may be complicated by hypoproteinaemia, which in most patients is due to the development of nephrotic syndrome. However, in some proteinuria is insignificant and enteric protein loss has been suggested as the cause. A case with supportive evidence for this is reported.
Twelve control dogs receiving a single intravenous injection of mercuric chloride, 3.0 mg. per kg., all died within 4 to 11 days afterwards with marked nitrogen retention and extensive necrosis and calcification of the epithelium lining the proximal convoluted tubules. Three dogs of comparable age and weight were reduced to a standard hypoproteinemic state by repeated plasmapheresis. Each dog t...
Celiac crisis is a rare life-threatening presentation of celiac disease that manifests as profuse diarrhea, hypoproteinemia, and severe metabolic disturbances. It may be precipitated by a general immune stimulus such as surgery, infection, or pregnancy. We report the case of a 26-year-old woman who presented with a celiac crisis, potentially triggered by a preceding urinary tract infection. Met...
A 9-year-old female, presented with recurrent bilaterally symmetrically distributed flesh colored vegetative plaques, papules and nodules on trunk and upper and lower extremities since 15 days. Investigations revealed anemia, hypoproteinemia, decreased albumin and positive D-xylose test. Pus swab and biopsy for culture sensitivity showed Enterococci species. Biopsy showed spongiotic psoriasifor...
A 26-year-old male patient who had an 8 years history of recurrent peripheral edema with diarrhea and hypoproteinemia was evaluated. Endoscopic jejunal and ileal biopsy revealed markedly dilated mucosal lymph vessels with no evidence of inflammation. 99mTc-labeled human serum albumin (HSA) scintigraphy showed significant activity accumulating in the gastrointestinal tract to represent 99mTc-HSA...
Infantile systemic hyalinosis is a rare, progressive, fatal condition with a presumably autosomal recessive mode of inheritance. It is characterized by widespread deposition of hyaline material in many tissues. We present a three-month-old girl with hypoproteinemia, growth retardation, and generalized stiff and edematous skin, who was diagnosed as protein-losing enteropathy. A final diagnosis o...
Background: Although allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) offers the possibility of cure for hematological malignancies, various complications have been described. Capillary leak syndrome (CLS) has been previously observed in HSCT patients. CLS is a rare disease characterized by recurrent episodes of generalized edema and severe hypotension along with hypoproteinemia. ...
Intravenous transfusion is resorted to in various conditions of malnutrition, hypoproteinaemia and in surgery requiring intravenous alimentation (Elman, 1952; Levy and Siller, 1942; Krishnan, 1944). Being a preparation derived from proteins, several tests for its preparation, freedom from toxicity, and antigenic reactions are laid down in the pharmacopoeia (cf. Basu, Bose and Sen, 1946; U. S. P...
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the efficacy and safety of the ketogenic diet (KD) treatment of refractory childhood epilepsy in China and determine which children are more likely to respond. METHODS Between 2004 and 2011, we prospectively enrolled 317 children with refractory epilepsy for the KD treatment in Shenzhen Children's Hospital and followed up for at least a year. Outcome was measured by seiz...
