OBJECTIVE To compare different strategies predicting hyperkalemia (serum potassium level ≥5.5 mEq/l) in hospitalized patients for whom medications triggering potassium-increasing drug-drug interactions (DDIs) were ordered. MATERIALS AND METHODS We investigated 5 strategies that combined prediction triggered at onset of DDI versus continuous monitoring and taking into account an increasing num...
Liver disease is often associated with dysfunctional potassium homeostasis but not a well-established risk factor for hyperkalemia. This retrospective cohort study examined the potential relationship between liver and recurrent Patients ≥1 serum measurement January 2004 December 2018 who experienced hyperkalemia (serum >5.0 mmol/L) were identified from United States Veterans Affairs database...
Potassium is abundant in the ICF compartment in the body and its excretion primarily depends on renal (about 90%), and to a lesser extent (about 10%) on colonic excretion. Total body potassium approximated to 50mmol/kg body weight and 2% of total body potassium is in the ECF compartment and 98% of it in the intracellular compartment.Dyskalemia is a frequent electrolyte imbalance observed among ...
Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a critical complication of type 1 diabetes associated with water and electrolyte disorders. Here, we report a case of DKA with extreme hyperkalemia (9.0 mEq/L) in a patient with type 1 diabetes on hemodialysis. He had a left frontal cerebral infarction resulting in inability to manage his continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion pump. Electrocardiography showed ty...
BACKGROUND Amino acid co-infusion for renal protection in endoradiotherapy (ERT) applied as prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted radioligand therapy (RLT) or peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) has been shown to cause severe hyperkalemia. The pathophysiology behind the rapid development of hyperkalemia is not well understood. We hypothesized that the hyperkalemia should b...
We tested the hypothesis that cardiac ischemia uncouples the beneficial interaction among hyperkalemia, acidosis, and raised plasma catecholamines when these chemicals are changed to mimic their exercise levels. Potassium chloride, lactic acid, and norepinephrine (NE) were infused intravenously for 2 min into anesthetized, artificially ventilated, thoracotomized rabbits during either occlusion ...
Marked peaking of the T waves later recognized as being due to hyperkalemia was noted in a patient with acute fluoride intoxication before developing refractory ventricular fibrillation. Such T wave changes have not been previously described in fluoride intoxication and should alert one to the presence of hyperkalemia complicating this condition, the presence of which may herald the onset of le...
IMPORTANCE Hyperkalemia is a potentially life-threatening condition predominantly seen in patients treated with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) inhibitors with stage 3 or greater chronic kidney disease (CKD) who may also have diabetes, heart failure, or both. OBJECTIVES To select starting doses for a phase 3 study and to evaluate the long-term safety and efficacy of a potassium-bi...
We present a case of prominent hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia attributed to magnesium infusion in a preeclamptic patient. Iatrogenic hypermagnesemia is an underrecognized cause of hypocalcemia and hyperkalemia. Our report illustrates the effects of magnesium therapy on serum calcium and potassium, necessitating close electrolytes monitoring when used.
