The BGK model kinetic equation is applied to spatially inhomogeneous states near steady uniform shear flow. The shear rate of the reference steady state can be large so the states considered include those very far from equilibrium. The single particle distribution function is calculated exactly to first order in the deviations of the hydrodynamic field gradients from their values in the referen...

The basis for a hydrodynamic description of granular gases is discussed for a low density gas of smooth, inelastic hard spheres. The more fundamental mesoscopic description is taken to be the nonlinear Boltzmann kinetic equation. Two arguments are presented in favor of a hydrodynamics for granular gases. The first one is the concept of a ”normal” solution and its explicit approximate constructi...

A polymer model with excluded volume interactions represented by a relatively soft potential is employed in Brownian dynamics simulations. The model and method have been shown in previous work to reproduce equilibrium properties and diffusion coefficients calculated with preaveraged hydrodynamic interactions. Trajectories obtained with fluctuating hydrodynamic interactions are now analyzed to o...

The dynamics of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) are highly nonlinear and time varying and the hydrodynamic coefficients of vehicles are difficult to estimate accurately because of the variations of these coefficients with different navigation conditions and external disturbances. This study presents the on-line system identification of AUV dynamics to obtain the coupled nonlinear dyna...

7 reaction-diffusion system at appropriate values of the rate coefficients and particles’ diffusion constant. This relationship is called “duality” by the probabilists; it is not via some hydrodynamic description of the interacting particle system. In this paper we present a complete derivation of the duality relationship and use it to deduce some properties of solutions to the stochastic Fishe...

The coupled in-plane diffusion dynamics between point-particles embedded in stacked fluid membranes is investigated. We calculate the contributions to the coupling longitudinal and transverse diffusion coefficients due to particle motion within the different as well as the same membranes. The stacked geometry leads to a hydrodynamic coupling between the two membranes.

We develop the kinetic theory of dilute cohesive granular gases in which the attractive part is described by a square well potential. We derive the hydrodynamic equations from the kinetic theory with the microscopic expressions for the dissipation rate and the transport coefficients. We check the validity of our theory by performing the direct simulation Monte Carlo.

We study the dynamics of a granular gas heated by a stochastic thermostat. From a Boltzmann description, we derive the hydrodynamic equations for small perturbations around the stationary state that is reached in the long time limit. Transport coefficients are identified as Green-Kubo formulas obtaining explicit expressions as a function of the inelasticity and the spatial dimension.

The nonlinear and multi-factor-dependent characteristics of the hydrodynamic forces acting on the aft body of a supercavitating vehicle are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The CFD model of natural supercavitating flow is first verified and validated upon the supercavitating flow around a cavitator in the shape of a circular disk. Then the model is used to simulate the sup...
