A computational approach to the optimization of service properties of two-phase materials (in this case, fracture resistance of tool steels) by varying their microstructure is developed. The main points of the optimization of steels are as follows: (1) numerical simulation of crack initiation and growth in real microstructures of materials with the use of the multiphase finite elements (MPFE) a...

Exposing an optical fiber core to the measurand surrounding the fiber is often used to enhance the sensitivity of an optical fiber sensor. This paper reports on the rapid fabrication of microstructures in an optical fiber using a CO₂ laser system which help exposing the optical fiber core to the measurand. The direct-write CO₂ laser system used is originally designed for engraving the polymeric...

The Hydraulic excavator machines are heavy duty earth mover consisting of a boom, arm and bucket. It works on principle of hydraulic fluid with hydraulic cylinder and hydraulic motors. The Hydraulic excavator backhoe operation require coordinated movement of boom, arm and bucket to control the bucket tip position by following a desired trajectory and to use the excavator machines effectively in...

abstract many studies have been conducted on the characteristics of hydraulic jump over gradually expanding cross sections, but comparatively few have been carried out on basins with convergent wall. in the present research, the hydraulic jump characteristic of the stilling basin with convergent wall has been investigated. the main objective of this research is evaluation of conjugate depths ra...

Highly unsaturated soil mixtures (clay, sand and gravel) are used as building materials in many parts of the world, and there is increasing interest in understanding their mechanical and hydraulic behaviour. In the laboratory, xray computed tomography (XRCT) is becoming more widely used to investigate the microstructures of soils, however a crucial issue for such investigations is the choice of...

The paper deals with indirect evaluation of the effective thermal or hydraulic conductivity of a random mixture of two different materials from the known effective complex permittivity of the same mixture. The method is based on deriving information about the microstructure of the composite from measurements of its effective properties; we call this approach inverse homogenization. This structu...

Design of optimal microstructures for infiltrated solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) electrodes is a complicated process because of the multitude of the electrochemical and physical phenomena taking place in the electrodes in different temperatures, current densities and reactant flow rates. In this study, a stochastic geometric modeling method is used to create a range of digitally realized infi...

This paper addresses the attainability of the Hashin-Shtrikman bounds for multiphase composites, including those of conductive materials and elastic materials. It presents a new derivation of these bounds that yield a necessary and sufficient condition for optimal microstructures. A key idea is a simple characterization of the gradient Young measures associated with optimal microstructures.

The characterization of microstructures in three dimensions is reviewed, with an emphasis on the use of automated electron backscatter diffraction techniques. Both statistical reconstruction of polycrystalline structures from multiple cross sections and reconstruction from parallel, serial sections are discussed. In addition, statistical reconstruction of second-phase particle microstructures f...

Here we describe, for the first time, intriguing solvato-morphological control of spiropyran-based microcrystalline structures. These microstructures exhibit reversible photoisomerization upon light irradiation (UV/Vis) in the solid-state. Finally, light-guided aggregation of these microstructures at the liquid/air interface is also demonstrated.
