Quarter space problems have many useful applications wherever an edge is involved, and solution to the related contact problem requires extension to the classical Hertz theory. However, theoretical exploration of such a problem is limited, due to the complexity of the involved boundary conditions. The present study proposes a novel numerical approach to compute the elastic field of two quarter ...

Hertz contact theory has been widely used for the determination of cell elasticity based on AFM indentation experiments. In light of the adhesive contact between AFM tip and cell, this study applied Johnson-Kendall-Roberts (JKR) model to fit the indentation force-displacement (F-D) curves reported previously. A MIN6 cell has been modeled as first a sphere and then a flattened cell with differen...

Recent experimental research indicates that superelastic shape memory alloy nickel–titanium (NiTi) is superior to stainless steel against wear and could be applied in tribological engineering. It is believed that the super wear resistance of shape memory alloys is mainly due to the recovery of the superelastic deformation. Our recent wear study indicates that wear rate is very sensitive to the ...

Auditory thresholds were determined for infants and adults to half-octave bands of noise centered at 10,000 and 19,000 hertz. Adults were significantly more sensitive than infants at 10,000 hertz, but at 19,000 hertz, adults and infants had comparable thresholds.
