BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus is hyperendemic in Sudan. Our aim was to molecularly characterize hepatitis B virus from Sudanese individuals, with and without liver disease, because genotypes play an important role in clinical manifestation and treatment management. METHODS Ninety-nine patients - 30 asymptomatic, 42 cirrhotic, 15 with hepatocellular carcinoma, 7 with acute hepatitis and 5 with ...
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important cause of sporadic and epidemic hepatitis E infection in northern India. Sera, collected from different age groups in rural (n=1144) and urban (n=1135) areas using a probability proportional to size survey, were tested using an ELISA for IgG antibodies. Antibodies increased with age in both populations, but the urban population had higher exposure in all a...
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a global pathogen responsible for approximately 20 million infections every year in developing countries, yet remains under-recognized. In this population-based cohort study, 1,025 randomly selected participants were enrolled from Matlab, Bangladesh (2004-2005). All participants were tested for HEV antibodies and total immunoglobulin (Ig), using an in-house enzyme imm...
We characterized 42 hepatitis E virus (HEV) genotype 3 strains from infected patients in France in 3 parts of the genome and sequenced the full-length HEV genotype 3f genome found in Europe. These strains are closely related to swine strains in Europe, which suggests zoonotic transmission of HEV in France.
Hepatitis E virus sequences were detected by RT-PCR in 14/15 (93%) of untreated sewage samples from Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. Phylogenetic analysis of amplicons at limiting dilution revealed the co-circulation of multiple variants of HEV-3, with a pattern of diversity matching that observed in a local cohort of HEV-infected hepatitis patients.
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is an important public health concern in the world, especially in developing countries of Africa and Asia, including China. Hepatitis E is recognized as a zoonotic disease, which is transmitted across species, including between humans and swine. HEV is highly endemic in China, but the complete sequence of HEV in southwestern China is lacking. Swine HEV strain KM01 was is...
Hepatitis E virus (HEV), a non-enveloped, positive-stranded RNA virus, is transmitted in a faecal-oral manner, and causes acute liver diseases in humans. The HEV capsid is made up of capsomeres consisting of homodimers of a single structural capsid protein forming the virus shell. These dimers are believed to protrude from the viral surface and to interact with host cells to initiate infection....
Data about prevalence of hepatitis E virus infection in persons who inject drugs are limited. Among 18-40-year-old persons who inject drugs in California, USA, prevalence of antibodies against hepatitis E virus was 2.7%. This prevalence was associated with age but not with homelessness, incarceration, or high-risk sexual behavior.
conclusions considering the results, it seems necessary to conduct prospective studies in order to identify factors responsible for the high seroprevalence of hev in isfahan hd units. results anti-hev igg was detected in 27 (9.9%) controls and 78 (28.3%) patients, with the difference being statistically significant (p < 0.05). furthermore, there was a significant association between positive an...
conclusions this study provides support for the hypothesis that humans are probably infected after contact with swine sources. the findings emphasize the importance of checking the country of origin of swine and of improving sanitary control measures from the veterinary standpoint to prevent the spread of hev infection in italy. materials and methods a total of 327 hev sequences of swine and hu...
