Bronchial carcinoid tumors are considered to be of low grade malignancy, and if completely resected, to be cured. A patient with resection of a bronchial carcinoid presented 18 years later with superior vena caval obstruction, and carcinoid syndrome due to a recurrence. There was an excellent response to radiation.

Ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) syndrome accounts for 10%–20% of the cases of ACTH-dependent Cushing’s syndrome (1). Ectopic ACTH secretion typically results from an occult, slow-growing bronchial carcinoid tumor. The diagnosis of these relatively small tumors can be difficult with conventional imaging procedures, such as computerized tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MR...

Carcinoid heart disease is characterized by heart valve dysfunction as well as carcinoid symptomatology. We report a case of carcinoid heart disease associated with a primary ovarian tumor. A 60-year-old woman presented for dyspnea evaluation with a history of facial flushing, telangiectatic skin changes, and pitting edema of both lower extremities. Chest radiography showed cardiomegaly, and ec...

Many clinicians prefer to avoid surgery in patients with carcinoid neoplasia, because of its slow growth and relatively favourable prognosis. Nevertheless, the commonest cause of death in patients with carcinoid is advanced metastatic disease, and both clinical and epidemiological data indicate that the more effectively the disease is ablated, the more long-lasting the benefit. Multidisciplinar...

BACKGROUND The management of patients with carcinoid heart disease poses two major challenges for the anaesthetist: carcinoid crisis and low cardiac output secondary to right ventricular (RV) failure. Carcinoid crises may be precipitated by the administration of catecholamines and histamine-releasing drugs. METHODS We analysed a series of 11 patients [six males, median (range) age 60 (42-73) ...

Heart valve disease and pulmonary hypertension, in patients with carcinoid tumors and people who used the fenfluramine-phentermine combination for weight control, have been associated with high levels of serotonin in blood. The mechanism by which serotonin induces valvular changes is not well understood. We recently reported that increased oxidative stress is associated with valvular changes in...

Four patients with a malignant carcinoid tumour of the small bowel (three had the carcinoid syndrome) developed gangrene of the small intestine. Attention is drawn to this seldom recognized complication, as early surgery may be life saving.

A patient with a 5-hydroxyindole-secreting rectal carcinoid tumour is described, the second on record. There was no clinical evidence of carcinoid syndrome. Prostaglandin-like substances were isolated from hepatic metastases.

Backgraund: Carcinoid tumor is the most common type of neuroendocrine tumor. Appendix is one of the most common sites of gastrointestinal carcinoid tumors. Appendectomy may be performed without mesoappendix excision by some surgeons in general practice. In that case, what happens, if a carcinoid tumor turns out to be responsible for the symptoms? In our series, this practice and carcinoid cases...

Carcinoid syndrome creates many challenges during anaesthesia, including hypertension, hypotension and bronchospasm. These challenges are less common and less severe after the routine use of octreotide. We describe the use of remifentanil as part of the anaesthetic management of a 67-yr-old man undergoing resection of a carcinoid tumour of the terminal ileum. The combination of perioperative oc...
