Lysis by KOH and hydrolysis of L-alanine-4-nitroanilide were compared with the Gram reaction of aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria. Both tests correlated well with the Gram reaction with nonfermentative bacilli and Bacillus species, whereas they did not correlate with nonsporulating anaerobes. Only campylobacteria were KOH positive and L-alanine-4-nitroanilide and gram negative.

The chemical composition of essential oils isolated from the leaves of Cosmos bipinnatus and its antibacterial activity were analyzed by GC-MS and microbroth dilution assay respectively. The essential oil extracted from this plant was predominantly composed of monoterpenes (69.62%) and sesquiterpenes (22.73%). The antibacterial assay showed that the oil had significant inhibitory effects agains...

Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Gram-negative bacteria have emerged as a serious threat to human and animal health. Bdellovibrio spp. and Micavibrio spp. are Gram-negative bacteria that prey on other Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, the ability of Bdellovibrio bacteriovorus and Micavibrio aeruginosavorus to prey on MDR Gram-negative clinical strains was examined. Although the potential use of p...

Intestinal bacteria were classified as gram-positive or gram-negative by an electrode system with a basal plane pyrolytic graphite electrode and a porous nitrocellulose membrane filter to trap bacteria. When the potential of the graphite electrode was run in the range of 0 to 1.0 V versus the saturated calomel electrode (SCE), gram-positive bacteria gave peak currents at 0.65 to 0.69 V versus t...

Background: Many studies have shown that periodontal pathogens are emerging as a risk factor for preterm delivery and low birth weight, but there are few studies about the relationship between other oral bacteria and pregnancy outcomes. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between salivary bacteria and pregnancy outcomes. Methods: This cohort study was performed on 30...

Background/objective: Neonatal septicemia is one of the major causes of mortality in newborns. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical manifestations and laboratory findings in positive blood culture in neonatal septicemia. Methods: In this retrospective study, we allocated 100 records positive blood culture of neonates suffering from septicemia. A questionnaire was completed for each...

Lacticin Q, a lactococcal pore-forming bacteriocin, shows activity toward Gram-positive bacteria but not Gram-negative bacteria. Lacticin Q did not induce permeability of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Experiments using model membranes containing outer membrane components suggested that lacticin Q binds to the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria but is unable to penetrate it...

a wide range of medicinal plant parts that possess varied medicinal properties are used for extracts as raw drugs. in this study, the ethanolic extract obtained from aerial parts of fennel (foeniculum vulgare mill.) seedlings was evaluated in vitro to examine their antimicrobial activity against four gram-negative and three gram-positive bacteria and two fungi. aerial parts of one-month-old see...

Over the last decade or so, a wealth of research has established that bacteria communicate with one another using small molecules. These signals enable the individuals in a population to coordinate their behaviour. In the case of pathogens, this behaviour may include decisions such as when to attack a host organism or form a biofilm. Consequently, such signalling systems are excellent targets f...

Members of the families Neisseriaceae, Pasteurellaceae and Moraxellaceae are capable of transferrin-iron acquisition in the absence of siderophore production. They do so via expression of a bi-partite receptor composed of two dissimilar proteins, TbpA and TbpB. Both proteins are surface exposed, iron-regulated and capable of binding transferrin. However, other physiochemical, antigenic, and imm...
