Ion plating is essentially vapor deposition onto a substrate which is the cathode of a glow discharge. The most important characteristic of the technique is that the growing film is subjected to a flux of high energy particles (neutrals and ions). In this study we report information about the effect of ion plating parameters on grain diameter and crystallite size distribution. At a constant pot...

We report on detailed laboratory experiments designed to illustrate the frictional behavior of granular volcanic debris. The materials include pyroclastic flow debris from Soufrière Hills Volcano, Montserrat, and from Stromboli Volcano, Italy, and lahar deposits from Mount St. Helens. Experiments were conducted in a servo-controlled, double-direct shear apparatus under conditions of displacemen...

Using data from the 1979 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, I identify causal effects of marriage and cohabitation on total family income. My goals are to compare men's and women's changes in financial status upon entering unions and to assess the relative contributions of adjustments in own income, income pooling, and changes in family size. Changes in own income that are due to intrahouse...

Grain size is an important control on mantle viscosity and permeability, but is difficult or impossible to measure in situ. We construct a two-dimensional, single phase model for the steady state mean grain size beneath a mid-ocean ridge. The mantle rheology is modeled as a composite of diffusion creep, dislocation creep, dislocation accommodated grain boundary sliding, and a plastic stress lim...

It is well-known that the mechanical behavior of rocks under cyclic loading is much different from static loading conditions. In most constructions, the load applied to structures is within dynamic ranges. That’s why a great deal of attention has been paid towards this field in order to identify the dynamic behavior of rocks in more details. Nevertheless, the nature of dynamic failure in rocks ...

Results on annealed nickel show that the total number of counts of both magnetic and acoustic Barkhausen signals vary inversely with grain size. In decarburized steels the total number of counts and the amplitude of both Barkhausen signals increase in proportion to grain size. The paper addresses these results in context of grain size, grain‐boundary segregation, and precipitate effect.

The powder and compact characteristics as well as the sintering behaviour of two Ce02-G&03 compositions prepared by the oxalate coprecipitation method are studied as a function of the powder particle size and the pore-size distribution in the powder compacts. Shrinkage was measured at a constant heating rate and the results are compared with those obtained by isothermal sintering experiments. G...

There is still very limited information on the physical and chemical properties of dried distiller’s grain with solubles (DDGS) derived from wheat-based fuel ethanol production. As this coproduct become increasingly more available in Western Canada, baseline information on its properties is essential in responding to problems posed by existing processing, handling, storage, and transportation s...

[1] Lithospheric shear localization, as occurs in the formation of tectonic plate boundaries, is often associated with diminished grain size (e.g., mylonites). Grain size reduction is typically attributed to dynamic recrystallization; however, theoretical models of shear localization arising from this hypothesis are problematic because (1) they require the simultaneous action of two creep mecha...

This work has two primary goals. The first is to advance our fundamental understanding of grain boundaries by making direct measurements of grain boundary thermodynamic properties using ultrafine-grained materials. The second is to explore possible deviations from conventional behavior at ultrafine grain sizes, specifically in regards to grain boundary thermodynamic properties and solute segreg...
