In the mycobiont of the liehen Lichina pygmaea mesosome-like structures are described which mainly occur in the fungi cells close to the algal layer. These structures consist of numerous irregularly arranged tubuli which are most distinct after fixation with glutaraldehyde at pH 7.0. Using different fixatives at varying pH they tend to visiculate. In the cytoplasm neighboured to the mesosome-li...

Two series of novel functionalized polyhydroisoquinoline derivatives have been synthesized via the three-component domino reaction of glutaraldehyde and malononitrile with a series of β-ketoamides under microwave irradiation conditions in the presence of a catalytic amount of Et3N (10 mol%). This reaction represents the first reported process for the facile conversion of a β-ketoamide to a hydr...

Cross-lining with glutaraldehyde has been successfully applied in order to analyze the kinetics of reassociation of oligomeric enzymes (R. Hermann, R. Rudolph, and R. Jaenicke Nature 277, 243 - 245 (1979). In the present study other assembly of lactic dehydrogenase from pig heart is investigated using this approach. In order to eliminate pertubations caused by excessive folding reactions, acid ...

Freeze-fracture electron microscopy reveals constant and widespread presence of membrane particles on the fracture faces of frozen myelin. In unfixed myelin frozen shortly after dissection the distribution of the particles is uniform. In glutaraldehyde-fixed and/or glycerol-impregnated myelin the particles frequently occupy a network interspersed with circumscribed particle-free areas of variab...

Although official guidelines recommend a plate counting method for testing the susceptibility of mycobacteria to disinfectants, manufacturers usually prefer to employ the BACTEC procedure. Data showing that the BACTEC method overestimates the activity of a glutaraldehyde-based disinfectant against Mycobacterium tuberculosis in comparison with a conventional plate counting procedure are presented.

Determining cell mechanical properties is increasingly recognized as a marker-free way to characterize and separate biological cells. This emerging realization has led to the development of a plethora of appropriate measurement techniques. Here, we use a fairly novel approach, deterministic lateral displacement (DLD), to separate blood cells based on their mechanical phenotype with high through...

When Anacystis nidulans, strain TX 20 was grown at 39 C, then rapidly chilled to 0 C, a pigment with a carotenoid-like spectrum was bleached. This effect was not seen when cells which had been grown at 25 C were chilled. The effect seen in 39 C-grown cells was not reversible except under extreme conditions such as heating to near boiling for several minutes. Bleaching could be prevented by prio...

A SERIES OF STUDIES is reported on changes in physical properties of red cells that indicate abnormalities in their rigidity or deformability. Increased rigidity is a term used to describe changes in red cells leading to increased viscosity of flow, a shift to more Newtonian type of flow and lack of deformability as measured by packing under centrifugal force or by diminished flow through micro...

Collagen-based implants have been described as vehicles for transplantation of cultured skin cells for treatment of burn wounds. To optimize vascularization and repair of connective tissue, collagen solubility and glutaraldehyde crosslinking were evaluated. Cultured skin substitutes consisted of human keratinocytes and fibroblasts attached to collagen-glycosaminoglycan substrates that were prep...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effect of gamma irradiation on glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium. METHOD Glutaraldehyde-fixed bovine pericardium was exposed to gamma radiation (doses from 0 to 10000 Gy). Six samples from each of nine groups were evaluated by optic microscopy, and shrinking and mechanical tests and the denaturation temperature was determined. Additionally, they were subcutaneo...
