With recent advances in molecular genetics, a new mechanism proposed for the inheritance of Bipolar Disorder is Genomic Imprinting or Parent of Origin Affect. In this study of 79 consecutive first episode manic patients, predominantly male, we failed to establish the phenomenon of imprinting. With other proposed non-Mendelian patterns of inheritance, it may be that bipolar disorder is genetical...

After a dengue outbreak in Key West, Florida, during 2009-2010, authorities, considered conducting the first US release of male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes genetically modified to prevent reproduction. Despite outreach and media attention, only half of the community was aware of the proposal; half of those were supportive. Novel public health strategies require community engagement.

Drosophila male courtship offers a unique experimental system to uncover the molecular and neural basis of genetically preprogrammed behavior. In this issue of Cell, Demir and Dickson (2005) and Stockinger et al. (2005) demonstrate that this behavior relies on a single splicing of the fruitless transcript, and on a specific olfactory-based neuronal circuit.

The molecular mechanism of sex determination in birds has long remained mysterious. Genetically male chicken embryos, which have two Z sex chromosomes, develop female gonads when the Z chromosome-linked gene DMRT1 is knocked out. This suggests that sex is determined by Z chromosome dosage.

Three members of an Indian family with facio scapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD linked to chromosome 4q35 with short EcoR1 segment of 23 Kb are reported where two male adults had schizophrenia. One family member developed isolated facial weakness with mild mental retardation. This genetically proven FSHD family is reported because of its uncommon associations.

Abstract Bird vocalizations are critical cues in social interactions as they convey temporary information varying with the context, for example, signaler motivation when facing a rival or potential mate. To date, literature mainly focused on learning birds. Burrowing petrels (Procellariidae) nonlearning birds limited vocal repertoire. Bachelor males communicate conspecifics single call emitted ...

Intestinal contents were sampled from a spontaneously enhanced mummy the Sepulcher of Priests Piraino Mother Church in Province Messina, Sicily. This adult male mummy, 1, is an unidentified religious dignitary dating late-18th to mid-19th centuries. Immunological and molecular diagnostics used test for common clinically significant parasites. A morphological diagnosis Trichuris trichiura (whipw...

Females may be attracted to males genetically resistant to infectious diseases, and one potential mechanism for this mating bias is that such males may be better able to maintain high testosterone. To test these two hypotheses, we collected scent-marks from male house mice (Mus domesticus) genetically resistant and susceptible to Salmonella due to a single locus (Nramp 1, also known as Slc11a1)...

In mammals and birds, sex differences in brain function and disease are thought to derive exclusively from sex differences in gonadal hormone secretions. For example, testosterone in male mammals acts during fetal and neonatal life to cause masculine neural development. However, male and female brain cells also differ in genetic sex; thus, sex chromosome genes acting within cells could contribu...

Gender Dysphoria (GD) is defined as a marked incongruence between one’s experienced/expressed gender and assigned that the individual feels strong desire for having sex characteristics of other gender. Twin studies could be helpful in making decisive conclusion on relative role genetics environment GD. Therefore, we hereby present case monozygotic twins with concordant female-to-male Seventeen-...
