Thomson’s classical analysis (1851, 1854a, 1854b) of thermoelectricity is cast into a modern form by means of contemporary thermodynamic methods based on the introduction of a free energy depending on strain, electrical charge and temperature. The present analysis identifies the phenomenological coefficients in Thomson’s theory in terms of standard thermodynamic functions derivable from the fre...
The computational Projective Dynamics method is used to analyze simulations of magnetization reversal in nanoscale magnetic pillars. It is shown that this method can be used to determine the magnetizations corresponding to the metastable minimum and saddle point in the free energy, and the free-energy barrier associated with those points. For the nanopillars studied here, entropy is found to pr...
In his recent paper [6] Michel Talagrand gave a rigorous proof of the Parisi formula for the free energy of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model. In the present paper we utilize the methodology developed in [6] to compute the thermodynamic limit of the free energy of the set of configurations with the fixed average of spins N−1 ∑ i≤N σi = uN as uN → u ∈ [−1, 1].
We obtain the Bethe Ansatz equations for the broken ZN -symmetric model by constructing a functional relation of the transfer matrix of L-operators. This model is an elliptic off-critical extension of the Fateev-Zamolodchikov model. We calculate the free energy of this model on the basis of the string hypothesis.
In this paper, we develop further the theory of thermostated systems along the lines of our earlier paper ([1] Fox). Two results are highlighted: 1) in the Markov limit of the contracted description, a least dissipation of Helmholtz free energy principle is established; and 2) a detailed account of the appropriateness of this principle for nanobiology, including the evolution of life, is presen...
Proposed in this contribution is a protocol for calculating fine-physics (e.g., ab initio QM/MM) free-energy surfaces at a high level of accuracy locally (e.g., only at reactants and at the transition state for computing the activation barrier) from targeted fine-physics sampling and extensive exploratory coarse-physics sampling. The full free-energy surface is still computed but at a lower lev...
We study the replica free energy surface for a spin glass model near the glassy temperature. In this model the simplicity of the equilibrium solution hides non trivial metastable saddle points. By means of the stability analysis performed for one and two real replicas constrained, an interpretation for some of them is achieved.
We investigate the free energy of nearest-neighbor random walks on Z d , endowed with a drift along the first axis and evolving in a nonnegative random potential given by i.i.d. random variables. Our main result concerns the ballistic regime in dimensions d ≥ 4, at which we show that quenched and annealed Lyapunov exponents are equal as soon as the strength of the potential is small enough.
We consider the fermionic contributions to the free energy of noncommutative QED at finite temperature T . This analysis extends the main results of our previous investigation where we have considered the pure bosonic sector of the theory. For large values of θT 2 (θ is the magnitude of the noncommutative parameters) the fermionic contributions decrease the value of the critical temperature, ab...
We provide a quantitative description of global minimizers of the Gauss free energy for a liquid droplet bounded in a container in the small volume regime.
