During the past 40 years, combined oral contraceptives (COCs) have become a key component of modern fertility regulation programmes. Today, an estimated 100 million women throughout the world use this method of contraception. With such wide-spread usage, it is perhaps not surprising that COCs have been the subject of extensive medical research.

Estrogens influence fertility and infertility in animals. This chapter reviews the use of estrogen as a contraceptive through the regulation of its production and action. In the male germline of Drosophila the transformer-2 protein is required for differential splicing of pre-mRNAs from the exuperantia and att genes and autoregulates alternative splicing of its own pre-mRNA. Autoregulation of TRA-2 splicing results in production of two mRNAs that differ by the splicing/retention of the M1 intron and encode functionally distinct protein isoforms. Splicing of the ...

Interactions between bone and the reproductive system have until now been thought to be limited to the regulation of bone remodeling by the gonads. We now show that, in males, bone acts as a regulator of fertility. Using coculture assays, we demonstrate that osteoblasts are able to induce testosterone production by the testes, though they fail to influence estrogen production by the ovaries. An...

Selection in dairy cattle for a higher milk yield has coincided with declined fertility. One of the factors is reduced expression of estrous behavior. Changes in systems that regulate the estrous behavior could be manifested by altered gene expression. This literature review describes the current knowledge on mechanisms and genes involved in the regulation of estrous behavior. The endocrinologi...
