Single-pool exponential decomposition models: potential pitfalls in their use in ecological studies.
The importance of litter decomposition to carbon and nutrient cycling has motivated substantial research. Commonly, researchers fit a single-pool negative exponential model to data to estimate a decomposition rate (k). We review recent decomposition research, use data simulations, and analyze real data to show that this practice has several potential pitfalls. Specifically, two common decisions...
We examine the asymptotic behavior of unit root tests against nonlinear alternatives of the exponential smooth transition type if the data is erroneously nonlinearly transformed. We show analytically and by a Monte Carlo study that the probability of rejecting the correct null of a random walk depends heavily on the type of data transformation. JEL-Numbers: C12, C22, F31
In the context of parameter estimation through state observers, we revisit the transformation of the induction motor model into a state-affine structure with respect to the unknown variables, then we compare in simulation the performances obtained through available adaptive and exponential forgetting factor observer designs.
In [Gottlieb (1998)] and [Gottlieb (2000)] we launched a study of Lorentz transformations. We find that every Lorentz transformation can be expressed as an exponential e where F is a skew symmetric operator with respect to the Minkowski metric 〈 , 〉 of form −+++. We provided F with the notation of electromagnetism. Thus we can describe boosts as pure ~ E fields and rotations as pure ~ B fields....
This work deals with the local rapid exponential stabilization for a Boussinesq system of KdVKdV type introduced by J. Bona, M. Chen and J.-C. Saut. This is a model for the motion of small amplitude long waves on the surface of an ideal fluid. Here, we will consider the Boussinesq system of KdV-KdV type posed on a finite domain, with homogeneous Dirichlet–Neumann boundary controls acting at the...
This manuscript introduces the matrix exponential as a way of specifying spatial transformations of the data. The matrix exponential spatial specification (MESS) simplifies the log-likelihood, leading to a closed form maximum likelihood solution. The computational advantages of this model make it ideal for applications involving large data sets such as census and real estate data. The manuscrip...
The optical mechanism for imprinting one-dimensional grating structures into thin films of a light-sensitive monodomain liquid crystal elastomer is investigated by analyzing the time dependence of optical diffraction properties. The recording kinetics shows an irregular oscillatory behavior, which is most expressed at small grating spacings and at temperatures close to the nematic-isotropic pha...
We consider bivariate exchangeable lifetimes, and we take into account residual lifetimes. We see how their dependence and, often, their multivariate aging, can be described in terms of copulæ. We study the evolution of dependence as time elapses, especially in the case of time transformed exponential models, where the associated copulæ are Archimedean.
This article introduces a hyper-exponential jump diffusion process based on the continuity correction for discrete barrier options under the standard B-S model, using measure transformation and stopping time theory to prove the correction, thus broadening the conditions of the continuity correction of Kou.
A key result in the theory of modal mu-calculus is disjunctive normal form theorem by Janin & Walukiewicz, stating that every formula semantically equivalent to a so-called formula. These formulas have good computational properties and play pivotal role mu-calculus. It therefore an interesting question what best normalisation procedure for rewriting into minimal size. The constructions are know...
