This paper describes the architecture of the Integrated Pest Management Expert System (IPMES) project that is being developed by the University of Otago and HortResearch. The project develops and applies new learning techniques to building intelligent systems. The overall intention of this project is to develop an adaptive decision support system for pest management based on information integra...

Bayesian networks have the ability to combine sparse data, prior assumptions and expert judgment into a single causal model. We present such a model of an Extreme Programming environment and show how it can learn from project data in order to make quantitative effort predictions and risk assessments. This is illustrated with the use of a real world industrial project.

The CIRCSIM-Tutor intelligent tutoring system project has been built on the basis of numerous studies of transcripts of expert human tutors (professors) teaching first year medical students. We also have transcripts of novice tutors (second year medical students) teaching the same material to medical students at the same level. In this paper we identify measurable differences in the teaching st...

Attempts to apply conventional rule-based expert systems to legal problem-solving raise seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The authors analyse the key challenges of developing a legal expert system by reference to a case study of issues arising in their prototype system, the JAES project. This paper explores the advantages of exploiting three alternative approachesnamely: case-based reasoning,...

A general language for specifying resource allocation in Scheduling problems is presented. TRAPS is a superclass of the RAPS (Resource Allocation Problem Specication) language developed by the authors [31]. TRAPS enables the speci cation of a scheduling problem by adding built in time operators, on top of existing terms for resources, activities, allocation rules and constraints. In this way TR...

BACKGROUND The European Centres of Reference Network for Cystic Fibrosis (ECORN-CF) established an Internet forum which provides the opportunity for CF patients and other interested people to ask experts questions about CF in their mother language. The objectives of this study were to: 1) develop a detailed quality assessment tool to analyze quality of expert answers, 2) evaluate the intra- and...

1 Abstract — In order to improve children speech therapy, we develop a Fuzzy Expert System based on a speech therapy guide. This guide, write in natural language, was formalized using fuzzy logic paradigm. In this manner we obtain a knowledge base with over 150 rules and 19 linguistic variables. All these researches, including expert system validation, are part of TERAPERS project (financed by ...

The inevitable proliferation of expert systems underscores the need for robust, friendly interfaces requiring minimal user training. The objective of the XCALIBUR project is to meet this need by providing natural comprehension and generation in the context of a focused mixed-initiative dialog. The XCALIBUR architecture is discussed, including its three central components (parser, generator and ...
