Cholecystitis is the most prevalent surgical condition affecting populations in industrialized countries. Rather than a single clinical entity, cholecystitis is a class of related disease states with different causes, degrees of severity, clinical courses, and management strategies. Appropriate care of the patient who has a diseased gallbladder requires a broad understanding of the acute, chron...
The aim of the study was to analyze the association between chronic cholecystitis, premalignant lesions and gallbladder cancer. The group consisted in 3901 cases of cholecystectomies, diagnosed as acute cholecystitis (250 cases - 6.4%), chronic cholecystitis (3619 cases - 92.8%) and gallbladder carcinoma (32 cases - 0.8%). Chronic cholecystitis associated premalignant lesions as follows: hyperp...
The aim of this study is to draw attention to acute acalculous cholecystitis, a rare complication that may occur during the post-burn period (usually within 20-30 days). A 42-yr-old male patient, the victim of 35% TBSA high-voltage electrical burns that caused the amputation of both upper extremities by day 45 post-burn, was brought to our operating theatre suffering from acute acalculous chole...
Not only bile but also chronic cholecystitis may play a role in gallbladder carcinogenesis. Numerous studies have revealed a close correlation between chronic inflammation and neoplasia. The experiments were conducted on paraffin sections, obtained from 377 surgically resected gallbladders with chronic cholecystitis. Immunohistochemical reaction was conducted on deparaffinized sections, using a...
Q fever cholecystitis in an unvaccinated butcher diagnosed by gallbladder polymerase chain reaction.
Acalculous cholecystitis has been described in association with Q fever. We describe the first known case of Q fever cholecystitis diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction on gallbladder tissue. The presence of Coxiella burnetii genome in the diseased gallbladder tissue argues for direct involvement of the organism in the pathogenesis of Q fever cholecystitis.
Acute cholecystitis is a very rare presentation of brucellosis. A case of acalculous cholecystitis caused by Brucella melitensis is reported with a review of previously reported cases.
Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) is an inflammation of the gallbladder, which does not appear to be associated with the presence of gallstones. AAC is estimated to represent more than 50% of cases of acute cholecystitis in the pediatric population. Although this pathology was initially described in critically ill patients, actually most pediatric cases have been observed during several infe...
Nausea and vomiting manifest in more than 50% of pregnancies; in case of severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, or hyperemesis gravidarum, other diagnoses should be considered. This case report details a 34-year-old pregnant woman with diabetes whose primary symptom was nausea and vomiting; she presented with mild abdominal pain without abdominal tenderness. After hospital admission, she ...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Acute cholecystitis is a fairly common inpatient diagnosis among the gastrointestinal disorders. The aim of this study was to use a national database of US hospitals to evaluate the incidence and costs of hospital admissions associated with acute cholecystitis. METHOD We analyzed the National Inpatient Sample Database (NIS) for all patients in which acute cholecystitis (IC...
Emphysematous cholecystitis is a variant of acute cholecystitis characterized by the presence of gas in the gall bladder lumen, wall or pericholecystic tissues in the absence of an abnormal communication between the biliary system and the gastrointestinal tract. In the past, the diagnosis has relied on the plain abdominal radiograph (AXR), since there are no clinical features to separate this c...
