We describe a rapid method for extraction and detection of enterovirus RNA in clinical samples. By using magnetic bead technology, enterovirus RNA was efficiently and rapidly extracted from cerebrospinal fluid, stool, saliva, blood, pericardial fluid, urine, and cryopreserved or formalin-fixed solid tissue. Enterovirus RNA was then detected by reverse transcription followed by polymerase chain ...

Enterovirus 71 is one of the major causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease in infants and children. Replication of enterovirus 71 depends on host cellular factors. The viral replication complex is formed in novel, cytoplasmic, vesicular compartments. It has not been elucidated which cellular pathways are hijacked by the virus to create these vesicles. Here, we investigated whether pro...

BACKGROUND Human enterovirus 71 has emerged as an important pathogen in the Asia Pacific region and it is important to be able to make a rapid and specific diagnosis for outbreak control. Recent Asian strains of Coxsackievirus A16 have changes in the VP1 gene which causes mispriming of widely used primers for human enterovirus 71 specific identification. METHODS Local strains of Coxsackieviru...

We have searched, using a sensitive nested-PCR, for enterovirus RNA in cerebrospinal fluid and post mortem central nervous system (CNS) tissue from patients with previous poliomyelitis with or without late functional deterioration, patients with motor neuron disease (MND), and control patients with other neurological disease or without neurological disease. Enterovirus RNA was detected in patie...

Since April 2016, Denmark, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and United Kingdom (Wales) have reported severe enterovirus infections associated with a variety of different strains. Compared with previous years, the Netherlands and Germany also reported increased detection of enterovirus-D68 and other enteroviruses. In addition, Ireland reported an increasing number in enterovirus-associated...

Recent outbreaks of enterovirus in Southeast Asia emphasize difficulties in diagnosis of this infection. To address this issue, we report 5 (4.7%) children infected with enterovirus 75 among 106 children with acute encephalitis syndrome during 2005-2007 in southern India. Throat swab specimens may be useful for diagnosis of enterovirus 75 infection.

The genus Enterovirus, a member of the Picornavirus family, are RNA viruses that can cause poliomyelitis, hand-food-mouth disease, viral meningitis or meningoencephalitis, viral myocarditis and so on. MicroRNAs are a class of highly conserved, small noncoding RNAs recognized as important regulators of gene expression. Recent studies found that MicroRNAs play a significant role in the infection ...

introduction : viral meningitis is an inflammation of the leptomeninges as a manifestation of central nervous system (cns) infection, and more than 85% of viral meningitis cases are caused by non-polio enteroviruses. molecular methods such as polymerase chain reaction (pcr) are increasingly used to detect and type non-polio enteroviruses. here, we describe the impact of these viruses on aseptic...

Human enterovirus B106 (EV-B106) is a recently identified member of enterovirus species B. In this study, we report the complete genomic characterization of an EV-B106 strain (148/YN/CHN/12) isolated from an acute flaccid paralysis patient in Yunnan Province, China. The new strain had 79.2-81.3% nucleotide and 89.1-94.8% amino acid similarity in the VP1 region with the other two EV-B106 strains...

During August 8, 2014-October 14, 2014, a total of 11 children with acute flaccid myelitis and distinctive neuroimaging changes were identified near Denver, Colorado, USA. A respiratory prodrome was experienced by 10, and nasopharyngeal specimens were positive for enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) for 4. To determine whether an association exists between EV-D68 infection and acute flaccid myelitis, we c...
