Certain kinds of cells, called end-stopped cells have been found to exist in the primary visual cortex of several mammals. Two kinds of end-stopped cells have been identiied. The single end-stopped cells respond strongly to corner-like stimuli in the real world. The second type of end-stopping is eeected by double end-stopped cells which respond strongly to a linear stimulus oriented in a speci...

The locomotory behaviour of ciliated protozoa results from the activity of the cell's cilia. The major variables in the protozoan's ciliary activity are the orientation of the effective stroke and the beating frequency. Ciliary orientation as used here is the direction of ciliary beat, or more specifically, the direction of the effective or power stroke. The effective stroke is defined as that ...

In this paper, we design an adaptive kinematic controller that asymptotically regulates a robot end-effector to a desired position and orientation under visual feedback (of points located on a fixed reference frame) from a camera mounted on the end-effector. This task is accomplished despite lack of depth measurements as well as uncertainty in the camera intrinsic parameter matrix.

The molecular orientations of conjugated materials on the substrate mainly include edge-on, face-on, and end-on. Edge-on face-on have been widely observed, while end-on orientation has rarely reported. Since in organic solar cells (OSCs) charge transport is along vertical direction, with backbones perpendicular to recognized as ideal microstructure for OSCs. In this work, we first time obtained...

This paper considers the camera-space position and orientation regulation problem for the camera-in-hand problem via visual serving in the presence of parametric uncertainty associated with the robot dynamics and the camera system. Specifically, an adaptive robot controller is developed that forces the end-effector of a robot manipulator to move such that the position and orientation of an obje...

Euler parameters constitute a well-known nonminimal singularity-free representation of rigid body orientation. This paper is aimed at illustrating the role of Euler parameters in robot control; namely, the kinematic control, dynamic control and impedance control problems are surveyed in a unifying perspective, where robot’s end-effector orientation displacements are described in terms of Euler ...

The vestibular system contributes to the generation of conjugate eye movements, spatial orientation, and postural control. The functional connections of the vestibular end-organs and of the descending vestibulospinal pathways and their importance to postural control were reviewed in the previous paper by Keshner and Cohen (pp. 320-330). This paper reviews the ascending vestibular pathways, the ...

BACKGROUND For effective deterrence methods, individual, systemic and situational factors that make an athlete or athlete group more susceptible to doping than others should be fully investigated. Traditional behavioural models assume that the behaviour in question is the ultimate end. However, growing evidence suggests that in doping situations, the doping behaviour is not the end but a means ...

In contrast to the abundant literature investigating how orientation coding depends on edges defined by various image features, relatively little is known about how coding of orientation might also depend on the two distinct functional roles that oriented edges commonly play. Oriented lines can delineate outline contours of a figure or they can form texture. The results of five experiments usin...
