We used pulsed-field gel electrophoresis analysis and genotyping to compare clinical isolates of Bordetella pertussis recovered since the early 1990s in Finland and France, 2 countries with similar histories of long-term mass vaccination with whole-cell pertussis vaccines. Isolates from both countries were similar genetically but varied temporally.

Duplex PCR was developed to screen Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium phage type DT104 and related strains in Thailand because a phage typing laboratory of serovar Typhimurium is not available. Of 46 isolates of serovar Typhimurium and 32 isolates of S. enterica serovar 1,4,[5],12:i:-, 15 (33%) and 30 (94%) were duplex PCR positive, respectively. All isolates were submitted for phage typin...

Reference strains for each of the 23 serogroups of Leptospira interrogans yielded different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of NotI digestion products. This was also the case for the 14 serovars belonging to serogroup Icterohaemorrhagiae (with one exception). The NotI restriction patterns of 45 clinical leptospiral isolates belonging to serovar icterohaemorrhagiae were analyzed and co...

Eleven Shigella flexneri (group B) isolates were recovered from epidemiologically linked patrons and food handlers from a restaurant-associated outbreak of shigellosis. Six isolates available for pulsed-field gel electrophoresis were identical. All strains agglutinated in group B and subgroup factor 6 sera but not in group 1 through group 6 sera.

Genotypes of carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii collected by the clinical microbiology laboratory of a university hospital in Chicago, IL, between 2004 and 2007 were analyzed by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. A single genotype established predominance after being introduced in 2005. Analysis of carbapenemases by PCR revealed that imipenem resistance but not meropenem resistance was...

In 2010, we observed isolates with matching pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns from 13 cases of ciprofloxacin-resistant Shigella sonnei in Montréal. We report on the emergence of this resistance type and a study of resistance mechanisms. The investigation suggested local transmission among men who have sex with men associated with sex venues.

Central nervous system infections caused by Bacillus cereus have rarely been reported in infants. In this paper, the case of a 2-month-old low-birth-weight female who developed meningitis 45 days after resolution of a bloodstream infection (BSI) is described. The pulsed-field gel electrophoresis results revealed that the patterns of both B. cereus isolates responsible for the acute meningitis a...

We applied a high-resolution PCR-based typing method, multiple-locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis (MLVA), for discrimination of 30 multidrug-resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus epidermidis. The results of MLVA were congruent with results obtained by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). MLVA generated discrete character data, and its discriminatory capacity was comparable...

Two temporally and geographically clustered cases of meningitis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae expressing the infrequent Ib serotype are reported. Characterization by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and multilocus sequence typing revealed that the isolates were identical and represented the widely distributed ST10/ST8 lineage associated with serotype Ib.

During a β-lactam resistance surveillance study, 12 IMP-18-positive Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates belonging to 9 different pulsed-field gel electrophoresis groups were identified. In nine isolates, a class I integron with a novel gene array was identified that contained bla(IMP-18) and bla(OXA-224), while in two isolates the class I integron contained bla(IMP-18) and bla(OXA-2) but in a new a...
