A perfectly matched layer (PML) is combined with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC) for mesh truncation in the finite element solution of electromagnetic scattering problems. It is shown by one-, two-, and three-dimensional examples, that the combined PML and ABC has less undesired reflection than the PML or ABC alone.

Electromagnetic field is simulated in time domain by mapping Maxwell's equations onto threedimensional cellular neural networks. Components of the field vectors are associated with interleaved grids, and different templates are used for each component and for each medium present in the mesh. At the network boundary, suitable templates are used to simulate perfectly absorbing planes.

We make a generalization of the integral method in the electromagnetic theory of gratings to study diffraction by echelles covered with dielectric lossless or absorbing layers. Numerical examples are given that show that, as in the resonance domain, the diffraction efficiency is more complicated than being a simple product of lossless diffraction efficiency curves and plane surface reflectivity.

The electromagnetic and microwave absorbing properties of nickel ferrite nanocrystals were investigated for the first time. There were two frequencies corresponding to the maximum reflection loss in a wide thickness range from 3.0 to 5.0 mm, which may be bought by the nanosize effect and the good crystallization of the nanocrystals.
