Heart rate responses to autonomic stimulation and inhibition were studied in 13 diabetic autonomic neuropathy. Parasympathetic function was impaired in all patients and sympathetic function in most. One patient's heart appeared to be totally denervated. The consequences of cardiac denervation include tachycardia, a fixed heart rate, and a possible tendency to cardiac dysrhythmias, which caused ...

1. Review the clear relationship between obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension. 2. Discuss the cardiac consequences of sleep apnea, including coronary heart disease, heart failure, and different dysrhythmias. 3. Understand that sleep disorders beyond obstructive sleep apnea, such as insufficient sleep itself, may have an impact on the cardiovascular system. 4. Appreciate the potential benefi...

A 25-year-old man with idopathic atrial flutter and high grade atrioventricular (AV) block is described. Postcardioversion, sino-atrial (SA) and AV nodal dysrhythmias occurred. Treadmill exercise during atrial flutter increased AV conduction to 2:1, and normalized SA and AV nodal function following cardioversion. A neurogenic basis for these arrhythmias is hypothesized.

Introduction Ebstein’s anomaly is associated with a wide range of cardiac dysrhythmias, including presence of 1 or more accessory pathways. We present a case of a girl with Ebstein’s anomaly and symptomatic tachycardia. Electrophysiology study demonstrated a slow conducting decremental pathway as well as inducible antidromic reentrant tachycardia. Voltage mapping of the pathway potential was pe...

Purpose: The use of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) has increased in the treatment of comatose victims of cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury, refractory dysrhythmias, neonatal encephalopathy and asphyxia, near-drowning and hemorrhagic shock. The purpose of this study was to ascertain the level of understanding of TH use for comatose victims of cardiac arrest among healthcare providers in two d...

We present a case of diabetic ketoacidosis, known as one of the most serious metabolic complications of diabetes. We were confronted with rapid neurological deterioration and unseen glycaemic values, which reached almost 110 mmol/L, subsequently resulting in hyperkalaemia and life-threatening dysrhythmias. This is the first reported live case with such high values of blood glucose and a favoura...

Continuous tape recording of the electrocardiogram was carried out on 25 patients with sinus bradycardia or sinoatrial block. A 72-hour record was made on each fully ambulant patient, by a miniature portable tape recorder and the tapes processed with automatic dysrhythmia detection. A high incidence of slow and fast sinaatrial dysrhythmias was discovered and brief episodes of atrial tachydysrhy...
