We investigate the effect of drag force on the enstrophy cascade of two-dimensional Navier-Stokes turbulence. We find a power law decrease of the energy wave number (k) spectrum that is faster than the classical (no-drag) prediction of k(-3). It is shown that the enstrophy cascade with drag can be analyzed by making use of a previous theory for finite lifetime passive scalars advected by a Lagr...

Air drag on yarn and package surfaces affects yarn tension, which in turn affects energy consumption and ends-down in ring spinning. This paper investigates the effects of yarn hairiness on air drag in ring spinning. Theoretical models of skin friction coefficient on the surface of rotating yarn packages were developed. The predicted results were verified with experimental data obtained from co...

Flow past a square cylinder placed at an angle to the incoming flow is experimentally investigated using particle image velocimetry, hot wire anemometry, and flow visualization. The Reynolds number based on cylinder size and the average incoming velocity is set equal to 410. Data for four cylinder orientations =0, 22.5, 30, and 45° and two aspect ratios AR=16 and 28 are reported. Results are pr...

Precision orbit ephemerides (POE) are used to estimate atmospheric density along the orbits of CHAMP (Challenging Minisatellite Payload) and GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment). The densities are calibrated against accelerometer derived densities and considering ballistic coefficient estimation results. The 14-hour density solutions are stitched together using a linear weighted blen...

Many fish species transform in body shape during growth, but it remains unclear how this influences the mechanics of locomotion. Therefore, the present study focused on understanding how drag generation during coasting is affected by ontogenetic changes in the morphology of zebrafish (Danio rerio). The shapes of the body and fins were measured from photographs of fish ranging in size from small...

A single bubble is placed in a solid body rotating flow of silicon oil. From the measurement of its equilibrium position, lift and drag forces are determined. Five different silicon oils have been used, providing five different viscosities and Morton numbers. Experiments have been performed over a wide range of bubble Reynolds numbers (0.7 ≤ Re ≤ 380), Rossby numbers (0.58 ≤ Ro ≤ 26) and bubble...

Recent observational studies demonstrate that airsea momentum flux at high wind conditions in hurricanes strongly depends on the wave field and that the drag coefficient (Cd = u*/U10) levels off or even decreases at very high winds (Powell et al. 2003). Yet most hurricane research and forecast model utilize the bulk parameterization, i.e., the boundary layer parameterization based on the Monin-...

Smart Morphable Surfaces enable switchable and tunable aerodynamic drag reduction of bluff bodies. Their topography, resembling the morphology of golf balls, can be custom-generated through a wrinkling instability on a curved surface. Pneumatic actuation of these patterns results in the control of the drag coefficient of spherical samples by up to a factor of two, over a range of flow conditions.

In this work, nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to investigate uniform liquid argon flow past a carbon nanotube. In the simulation, nanotubes were modeled as rigid cylinders of carbon atoms. Both argon-argon and argon-carbon interactions were calculated based on Lennard-Jones potential. Simulated drag coefficients were compared with (i) published empirical equati...

Airflow over a flat plate at zero incidence is investigated as a function of the Reynolds number Re and the Mach number M under subsonic, low-Reynolds-number conditions. The flows are simulated using the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method and the information preservation (IP) method that is a modified DSMC method developed for low-speed rarefied gas flows. Good agreement is obtained be...
