The effects introduced by 4π charged-particle detector arrays such as the Microball on lifetime measurements by Doppler-shift attenuation techniques are discussed. The effect originates from the lower efficiency for detecting charged particles at backward angles. Procedures for correcting for such “bias” are described.

Conically scanning pencil-beam scatterometer systems, such as the recently launched SeaWinds radar, constitute an important class of instruments for spaceborne climate observation. In addition to ocean winds, scatterometer data are being applied to a wide range of land and cryospheric applications. A key issue for future scatterometer missions is improved spatial resolution. Pencil-beam scatter...

In this paper, we outline a basic framework for the reproduction of the wave field of moving virtual sound sources. Conventional implementations usually reproduce moving virtual sources as a sequence of stationary positions. This process leads to various artifacts as reported in the literature. On the example of wave field synthesis, we show that the explicit consideration of the physical prope...

Detailed knowledge of the wind resource is necessary in the developmental and operational stages of a wind farm site. As wind turbines continue to grow in size, masts for mounting cup anemometers—the accepted standard for resource assessment—have necessarily become much taller, and much more expensive. This limitation has driven the commercialization of two remote sensing (RS) tools for the win...

The Compton effect is commonly cited as a demonstration of the particle feature of light. In this investigation, we present an alternative interpretation of the Compton effect based on the postulates of de Broglie and on the wave scattering from a spaceand timevarying medium, without explicit resort to the conservation of energy and momentum. n e s s g f t p c s a w ( Here, the wet and dry adhesion properties of hybrid Ge/parylene nanowire (NW) connectors are examined. The ability of the NW connectors to bind strongly even under lubricating conditions, such as mineral oil, sheds light on the dominant role of van der Waals interactions in the observed adhesion. The superhydrophobic surface of the NW connectors enables the wet, selfcl...

This paper focuses on optical integration technology and its application in optical microsensors used in biomedical fields. The integration is based on the hybrid integration approach, achieving high performance, small size and weight, and lower cost. First, we describe the key technologies used in hybrid integration, namely passive alignment technology, low temperature bonding technology, and ...

This paper presents preliminary work on the development of a new method of calculating image motion elds based on visual doppler eeects. It is inspired from the use of doppler eeects in Radar. Unlike Radar, one cannot`send out' special signals of known frequencies into an image to measure velocities. It is the image itself that provides the (highly variable) frequency signals. However, what one...

In this paper, we describe an experiment performed at the Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers and dedicated to an optical measurement of the Boltzmann constant . With the proposed innovative technique, determining comes down to an ordinary frequency measurement. The method consists in measuring as accurately as possible the Doppler absorption profile of a rovibrational line of ammonia in thermal...

The consequences of spin-rotation-gravity coupling are worked out for linear gravitational waves. The coupling of helicity of the wave with the rotation of a gravitational-wave antenna is investigated and the resulting modifications in the Doppler effect and aberration are pointed out for incident high-frequency gravitational radiation. Extending these results to the case of a gravitomagnetic f...
