We report on the remote characterization and dispersion compensation (pulse compression) of femtosecond pluses using multiphoton intrapulse interference phase scan (MIIPS). The results presented here were carried out at a distance of 28.9 m from the target. The method could be used with targets placed kilometers away. The amplified pulses arrive at the remote target within one percent of transf...

In this paper four-wave mixing (FWM) and its impact on multi-span NRZ-modulated wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems are examined. The impact of the inline dispersion compensation map on FWM impairments is crucial. From re-circulating loop experiments as well as our analytical model worst-case conditions for the dispersion map are found. Furthermore, the impact of increasing the numbe...

This paper presents complete models for various fiber dispersions and their mitigations using electronic equalizers. A novel constantmodulus-adaptive CMA blind equalization technique is proposed for fiber dispersion compensation. Simulat...

The spectral characteristics of cross-phase modulation (XPM) in multispan intensity-modulation direct-detection (IM-DD) optical systems are investigated, both experimentally and theoretically. XPM crosstalk levels and its spectral features are found to be strongly dependent on fiber dispersion and optical signal channel spacing. Interference between XPMinduced crosstalk effects created in diffe...

We demonstrate continuously tunable optical delays as large as 1.1 micros range for 10 Gb/s NRZ optical signals based on four-wave mixing (FWM) process in silicon waveguide. The large delay range is made possible by a novel wavelength-optimized optical phase conjugation scheme, which allows for tunable dispersion compensation to minimize the residual group-velocity dispersion (GVD) for the enti...

We demonstrate adjustable negative chirp from a directly-modulated, injection-locked 1.55-μm VCSEL by controlling the injection parameters. Chromatic dispersion tolerance is enhanced by greater than 10X at 10-Gb/s compared to that of a free-running VCSELs. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (230.2035) Dispersion compensation devices, (250.7260) Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers

We obtain a simple and fast method to estimate the energy of the stable soliton solutions for a given bit rate in a dispersion-managed soliton communication system utilizing chirped fiber gratings for dispersion compensation. The estimates are in good agreement with the simulation results.

The electrical compensation of chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion in a coherent optical system exploiting polarization multiplexing is discussed in this paper. The benefits of combining a phase estimation algorithm with a decision directed least-mean-square equalizer in a feedback configuration is reported.

Different schemes of dispersion management for cascaded transmission systems composed of standard monomode fibers (SMFS) and dispersion compensating fibers have been studied considering the most essential boundary conditions for practical network design. Alternating ordering of the compensation sections is found to improve considerably the eye opening penalty for high amplifier spacings of 120 km.
