| Modal logic is introduced into the modeling of discrete-event systems. Analysis within this framework includes formal reasoning about what supervisors know or do not know about a given system. This model can be used to develop control strategies that solve decentralized discrete-event control problems. When a problem cannot be solved using fully decentralized supervisors, reasoning about know...

The behavior of a hybrid system is a mixture of continuous behavior and discrete event behavior. The Simulink/Stateflow toolset is a widely used industrial tool to design and validate hybrid control systems using numerical simulation methods for the continuous parts and an executable Stateflow (combination of Statecharts and Flowcharts) for the discrete event parts. On the other hand, Colored P...

In this paper, the control of a class of Discrete Event Systems is investigated. Discrete event systems are modeled by a collection of loosely synchronous Finite State Machines. The basic problem of interest is to ensure the invariance of a set of particular configurations in the system. We provide algorithms that, based on a particular decomposition of the set of forbidden configurations, loca...

In this paper the effect of faults in the elements and parts of discrete event systems is investigated. In the occurrence of faults, some states of the system must be changed and some of them must be forbidden. For this goal, different states of these elements are examined and a model for fail-safe behavior of each state is introduced. Replacing new models of the target elements in the prelimin...

Using simulation models for the development and testing of control systems can have significant advantages over using real machines. This paper demonstrates the suitability of the language χ for machine modelling. The language integrates a small number of powerful orthogonal continuous-time and discrete-event concepts. The discrete-event part of χ is based on a CSP-like concurrent programming l...

We deene and implement a (max,+) algebra of signals for the timing analysis of discrete event systems expressed as timed event graphs. A system is deened by the innnite, periodic time sequences of its events. Each sequence has a nite representations called a signal. The resulting tool can also compute supre-mal controllers for timed discrete event systems.

Consider the interaction of populations, in which there are exactly two species, one of which the predators eats the other the prey thereby affecting each other , s growth rates. In the study of this growth rate dynamics Lotka-Volterra models have been used. This paper proposes a new modeling and analysis methodology which consists in considering the growth rate dynamics as a discrete event sys...

An observational study of solving discrete-event supervisory control problems is described. Five graduate students with knowledge of discrete-event system control were asked to think aloud while solving two supervisory control problems. The problem-solving sessions were recorded using audio and video equipment, and subsequently analysed using protocol analysis. Patterns and strategies in solvin...

This paper establishes a link between the stability of a first order, explicit discrete event integration scheme and the stability criteria for the explicit Euler method. The paper begins by constructing a time-varying linear system with bounded inputs that is equivalent to the first order discrete event integration scheme. The stability of the discrete event system is shown to result from the ...
